I can't believe the op is even asking this question , well I guess I can in this day of lower morals . Sad that you ask for advice , then when you get it you tell the very same people to go to h--l .

If you are that desperate to add coins to your "collection" then why don't you browse eBay of other online coin sellers to satisfy your cravings? Oh, online you can't rip the coins from unsuspecting people who just inherited their relatives coins and have no clue what their value is.

Where I live the few coin shops in town are run by people who I would not want to give my business to because of their lack of ethics. When I was more physically able to I sold and bought coins at flea markets at fair prices always abiding by the ANA's code of ethics. That has served me well.

I believe his plan is when the gold buyers offer 50% of book value, he will swoop in and offer 52% and be the hero. Because 50% would be ripping people off.

I doubt he would be doing this to be the nicest guy in the world, and offer full value of all the coins coming in. To make sure all the collectors don't get taken advantage of.

LOL....whatever. Not going to continue this tirade with you. It's childish, I asked for a simple opinion, (which I gladly received from others with more class and respect, like Camaro and toughCOINS for instance) but you chose to go a step further and get all supercritical, (mis)quoting parts of what I said....that's the difference here between you and the rest of the CT members who left fair and reasonable feedback and carried on with their day....Troll on brother

I agree with your last sentence Dutchman. I don't have the deep pockets that you or most of the other "seasoned" collectors here have. The coins I buy or try to buy reflect that. At one point I thought this site was for ALL collectors, but I'm starting to get the feeling that if I don't own my own coinshop, or pay book value for EVERYTHING than I am some sort of immoral unethical scam artist. So you're right, I cant make the big cash offers the "big boys" can, but I'm still satisfied with my collection, spending the little money I do make on a hobby that I am passionate about. If that's not good enough for Books or anyone else here on CT than I guess that's too bad.....

Not really sad rzage. I think the pun "every coin has two sides to it" is a very valid statement. I simply presented an argument/idea/opinion/perspective and asked what others thought. Since I got a tidal wave of criticism (that's fine, free speech right?) I decided to play some devil's advocate (which I've been mercilessly attacked for doing) and present the so called "other side of the coin" or the opposing argument in favor of my idea....nothing more

Close bkozak33, close. In my local market (which none of you obviously live in) the range of offers for coins is typically 50%-85% of a coins value. These are the asset buyers, dealers, metal recyclers etc etc. I offer 90%-95%, which represents the TOP offer so far discovered on any local classifieds site/Craiglist forum. But I guess that's still not good enough for the high-end, professional, white collared crowd nailing me to the cross for the last 36hrs....Just out of curiosity does anyone on this thread know what a deal is? a discount? Has anyone here been offered a coin at less than market or even melt value that they have NOT accepted? "please, let me pay you MORE for what you're asking good sir! I insist!".....please

Stop the whining and "devil's advocate" nonsense; you've made your true intentions very clear and continue to do so with each and every attempt to justify your lame position. Please stop the deflective nonsense and bs accusations; no one has attacked your collection or the amount of money in your pocket because no one here would judge you for such things, yet you've found it in yourself to sling mud, resort to childish name calling, and then wonder why you're not being taken seriously. You've brought all this upon yourself, so you can either respect the opinions presented to you, even if "super-critical", or dismiss them as the ramblings of fools, but don't pretend to be the victim here because you're anything but.

Please Books, please. I've seen it happen time and again on here. I've DEFENDED newbie members on this site who posted their low end coins only to be targeted and dismissed as annoying, so don't be ignorant and pretend that doesn't happen. You're entitled to your opinion, I'm entitled to mine. This is how such things go, two sides to every argument, silencing the minority opinion doesn't make your point(s) any more valid, neither does it give you the right to act self-righteous when you know you're just as guilty for doing something similar at some point in your coin collecting past. This entire conversation has been sobering in many ways for me, that much is true, and I've learned several lessons, not only about the stance of many members on this site, but also the nature in which they seem to view collectors who don't think exactly as they do. Thanks.

If you're offering "90%-95%" of full retail on numismatic coins, as a blanket offer and not just an attempt to pick, you should have people beating down your door and would have no need for this little plan of yours. If on melt material/bullion, and if this is "TOP" of any other local offer, you should still have plenty of opportunities, and if not, perhaps you should consider advertising in something other than a free online service. If gold and/or hotel buyers are able to heard people through the door, maybe you should take a look at how they advertise and follow their lead. If what you claim is true, you've many options to try before even considering what would be a lowlife move. Unfortunately you don't seem to grasp that what amounts to stealing is not the only way of getting a "deal", and being "OFFERED a coin at less than market or even melt value" is totally different than hanging around outside of someone else's business and soliciting their customers. Instead of envying others and scheming to take advantage of their efforts, maybe you should start thinking outside the box and make things happen for yourself.

I think the unethical point trying to be made is that you are taking advantage of a business which someone put hundreds of thousands of dollars into by using their store as a marketplace of your own, and stealing THEIR customers at the same time. Plus, it's just downright inconsiderate and rude to be making offers to customers right in front of the owner of the establishment. They pay the bills so THEY can do business there, not YOU.

It's the same in principal. The manner in which a "deal" is presented is not important. Books I'd like to sell you my raw 1915 U.S. $2.5 Quarter Eagle (XF-AU) condition. I'd like $150 for it because I think that's fair....your move champ.

By the way how is what I initially proposed not thinking outside the box? If anything that tips the scale on doing all the necessary "legwork". Researching events, ordering business cards, meeting people and engaging them in conversation face to face, gas money from venue to venue....just because I didn't pay for a room or a table doesn't mean that I haven't spend personal resources.

    Oy vey!

You cannot honestly believe that just because you "research events, order business cards" and solicit outside of someone else's PAID business location, that you're thinking outside the box and are somehow justified in your actions. I am telling you, I've seen this crap before and it rarely ends well for the person doing it. You might be able to snag a few "deals", but sooner or later you're going to run into the wrong person and either get yourself in trouble or hurt. It's a funny thing, but people who pay for the opportunity to do business rarely take kindly to those who have not and very well may be costing them money.

As for your earlier accusation of me stooping to that level, I can categorically state that "in [my] coin collecting past" I've never done anything similar or even remotely close to what you wish to do. You see, I have standards and am a firm believer in respect begetting respect, but I also realize that it's tough to go it alone in this business, and this would likely be true even for someone who uses only online sales venues. It's also damn hard to earn a good reputation, yet very, very easy to get a bad one, but don't take my word for it; after all I am just another idiot on a coin forum.

john41 Toned coins, I like them. If I have it so can you.

Oh boy this is a funny thread, cut it out guys you are all up in your chests right not and no good can come of that. Many deals go down on the floor of a coin show and every one knows that. If you don't you have not been to a show. This type of thing happens all the time and not just with coins, look at food trucks, roach coaches, the food court at the mall, car dealers, antique fairs, flea markets etc...

The idea to approach customers outside of a B&M would get you in some trouble but I have seen and heard many a dealer at a show say I have the best prices or I saw you at so and so and will treat you better, that is still a form of "poaching". If the only qualification is to pay for a spot or table and then you can poach, do so. Buy the cheapest spot or table put a flier on it stating your buying options, what you are looking for and then go hand out business cards with your table # written on it to bring the customers over to you. This is all basic stuff here you just need to change the wording around. I have even gotten email from other dealers who see me at a competiters booth asking me to stop by. Come on now be nice guys....
