I could use some help from the collective expertise of the site here.

With the help of Numista.com, I've narrowed this coin down to:

    Japan - Yen (1871-date):
    10 Yen - Showa (Reeded edge) - 26-33 (1951-1958)

but I don't know the date since there are no numbers on it.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Your coin is dated Showa 29 (1954 AD). The date is on the reverse. That line of text under the large numeral 10 reads "Showa two-ten-nine year" in Japanese (using the Chinese-based script and numerals).

Oh, OK. Thanks for that info!

I figured that the symbols under the "10" might be numbers, but when looking at the Numista page for that coin, all I saw were squares with a letter/number in each corner (see attached), which to me means my computer doesn't have the correct font installed.

Do you guys see the symbols properly? Do I need to install a particular font?

I'm also getting the correct characters when I go to the Numista page. Not sure what the problem is on your end, sorry. I am using an iMac running Mac OS X version 10.9.
