    Japan, 1 yen, dated Showa 30 (= 1955 AD).

    These three characters (ri ben guo in Chinese) mean "Japan".

    Japan used almost exclusively Chinese characters at that period in time. In fact, one fluent in Chinese could usuallyread about 80% of a newspaper.
    Even today there are still quite a bit of Chinese characters in the Japanese language.
