Sorry to tell you Brad, but even if you lock this under lock and key its still going to be a fake in 50 years....I'm 110% sure that it is a fake. The detail is all wrong---there is no chance in the world that this is real. Speedy
Yup seems thats a trend here, the $500 confederate money is fake, the coin is fake. Oh well.. Guess I can keep admiring like it is real eh?
Hey Brad. One thing I've learned in my short time at this forum is that these guys are very honest and rarely wrong. They know their coins and have many years of experience in studying and spotting authentic and counterfeit coins. It amazes sometimes how they can look at a picture and comment most certainly on the authenticity of a coin. I have seen it happen many times. They give an opinion that a coin is a copy, the poster does not want to believe it. The poster sends the coin into a grading service and later reports back that the coin was returned as a fake. I would trust their opinions in so much as not getting my hopes up, but if you are at all unconvinced, you should consider sending it to a grading service for authentication.
Brad: I agree that both pieces are fakes. The currency should not be that type of paper, ie parchment. It is commonly used for producing replicas.
Send it to anacs. http://www.anacs.com. For about 30 bucks you will know for sure if it is real or fake. Probably fake but for 30 bucks you will know for sure!
Unfortunately that is fake as well. I have the exact same bill, with the same serial numbers. It came from some board game I had in the 80's. I have it propped up in my display case as a real peice of currency though. They even printed it on a tattered starched peice of paper to add realism.
First thing I saw on the coin that cinched it as a fake. The stars on the obverse are six pointed and of a style last used around 1836. Also the last US coins to use six pointed stars were the Barber quarter and half dollar. All other US coins since 1892 have used five pointed stars.
Have you contacted the Guinness Book about listing you as the person with the best eyesight in the world? How on earth did you spot that detail in the posted picture? I can barely tell the style of border star on the large pictures of real coins.
