I'm at least VG10. F12 would not surprise me.

Looks like an 8 or 10 tops to me. Nice looking coin.

True enough. I'm inclined to say "if so, it means that there was goop on the coin, and it's generally better to get the goop off" -- but if I had that coin in my hands, I'd be reluctant to disturb it, too!

I’m at 8. And a big fan of the acetone too. Gets the crud gone doesn’t touch the toning and surfaces

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

To me, this looks like an 8+ obverse with a 12 reverse.

I'd average it out an call it VG-10, but I do think you've got a good shot at F-12.

Only if you rubbed in with a cloth. Acetone or Methylene chloride would just remove any pvc that might be present.

Soaking some completely original coins in any liquid, even distilled water can remove stuff I’d rather have left on... admittedly this is a very small percentage of coins that I’m referring to but I mentioned it for the sake of new folks hearing “acetone can do no harm” in lots of places.

If you want to leave it truly original, that means the dust that fell off great great grandpa’s spectacles, the oil from hundreds of hands, anything that might be on there that can come off when submerged in liquid. If PVC is visible, I’d acetone every time.

I like your dime. I believe this one will come back F12 based on the strength of the reverse.

My above 1916-D Merc has been graded and I am shocked and disappointed. NGC only graded it as a G-6. Cant believe it. Was hoping for a 10-12. Most of you also said VG-8 and some a 10. What can I do now?

CAC maybe? Seems like I'm used to seeing AG03 technical detail on 1916-D's in G06 holders. I'm shocked, too.

NGC has tightened up lately in my experience.

I think they graded solely on the obverse. The reverse is very nice with about 12 details, but the obverse looks to be in the 6-8 range, and TPGs rarely grade up. Definitely disappointing, but not surprising with how hit-or-miss TPGs can be.

You could send it to PCGS. Even a bump to 8 is a $300-$400 jump in price.

    Not an F-12. G-8, G-10 tops.

Seems the detail is surely better than G6. Maybe they silently net graded for the dark spots or something else? Just wondering.
