I would appreciate your opinions on how these two compare: Thanks. First, the obverses. Coin 1: Coin 2: Reverses: Coin 1: Coin 2:
Hi Eduard, nice coins, which I see on an equal Level. I would prefer coin 2 for it's lightly better toning pattern.
Can I pick the reverse of coin 1 and obverse of coin 2? Ultimately, I would go with 2, because the scratches on 1 would bother me.
Interesting perspective. I was surprised at the subtle differences between both obverse pictures of coin 1, with one showing more surface disturbance than the other. Different lighting conditions is my guess.
Both are decent, but I prefer #2 because it seems to have fewer marks and lacks the spot by Star #13 as well as the small deposit around the 3 in the date on the first coin. (That being said, I do like the toning on the first coin- it is not a bad example, either.)
Here's another 1843-O coin, for no reason at all except to say that I like that early branch mint stuff. Of course 1843-O is a better date in dimes than in quarter eagles, with either of those two coins in the OP probably being worth quite a bit more than my gold piece here! (People from 1843 would no doubt be scratching their heads over that. How's a dime worth more than a quarter-eagle? You 21st century people are crazy!)
That is a nice '43-O Quarter Eagle, LordM! I don't know much about branch quarter eagles (or their values), but that is a nice example you have there.
Quote: "is one real and one fake?" No, they are both real. This is an exercise in comparing both coins.
If i had to choose between them, i'd choose coin #2. They appear to be the same grade but coin 2 has much better eye appeal.
I agree. Eye appeal is more important than strike in my book (and is for me the #1 consideration), though strike is of course one of many important attributes. Which isn't to suggest that Coin #1 lacks eye appeal. It's just that #2 has a little more.
The minor marks on Coin 1 I could live with- they don't bother me much - but the dark spot by Star 13 is rather distracting to me.
We are also talking different die marriages here as well variety . Coin #2 is an F 101a R 3 it is late die state.... thus strike isn't going to be sharp. And one must also remember that small mintages proof dies were used to strike mint state coins .
