Why is platinum more valuable than gold?

It is rarer. Supply vs. demand really.

Thanks Guardian for the simple answer. And for those posting spam it does nothing for this site. I never read them so why bother?

Platinum, however, is an extremely rare metal, even harder to find than gold. It doesn’t share the exact properties of gold – for example, you won’t find much “platinum leaf” around – but it does have a very high resistance to heat and its melting point is extremely high.

I think it is a better quality metal when pure, but the rarity makes it expensive.

I do not really know that much about platinum but I can see your point about it being pure. IF it is pure then I too think that it would have a better quality.
