I've been on these forums for a while now, but haven't contributed much. So I thought I'd post something. Although I collect a range of coins, I have a special love for the 'Age of Discovery' or 'Age of Sail' coins (~1500 to 1850). My most expensive coin from this era is a 2 escudos gold doubloon, which I like to think was 'pirate treasure' at some point in time (yeah probably dreaming, but whatever). I obviously had a limited budget and could only afford an entry level 2 escudos coin. I bought this specific coin because of the clear Spanish cross. It weighs 6.71g, and was bought on MA Shops. The shield is pretty bad (like many of these coins), but surprisingly there are a few interesting features which - despite the lack of date - indicate it is very likely to be Philip II or Philip III from Seville (combined with the obverse style), including: - the Portuguese shield imposed over the vertical lines of Aragon - Granada just under the Portuguese shield - the vertical position of the Flanders/Tirol shield in reference to the Austrian flag Also, sorry, the photos don't really do the coin justice. Anyone got some Spanish gold cob coins they can share?
Haha, I saw an alert pop up re this thread and thought "what on earth? That thread is years old!!" Zombies everywhere!!!!
