I'd like to add a "Pillar Dollar" to my collection since they were circulated so widely in the US and some of the design elements supposedly inspired our own currency and coin designs, most notable the dollar sign. I'd like to add one but don't know which mint or year would be an appropriate addition as one that could have circulated in early America. I'm assuming Mexico 8 Reales in the early to mid 1700s. Thoughts welcome.
Excellent choice to add one of these, as in addition to their historic significance, they have a high coolness factor. Choose a problem free, circulated specimen to one that has signs of salvage. The dates that start getting more expensive than a type coin are mostly in the 1730s. This is mine. I'll probably get some more sometime.
Now that's funny stuff, I don't care who you are..... John, your Pillar is a beauty. I love the patina!
I just bought my second one on ebay. The first one I bought turned out to be fake, 2 grams light on a 1776 Mexico 8 Reales EF coin. Be careful of the many fakes. My second one is a slabbed 1783 Mexico 8 Reales Cazador ship wreck coin.
