He was feeble minded. According to Plutarch this was because Olympias, Alexander's mother, tried to poison him to give no rivals to Alexander ascending to the throne. Alexander liked Philip III and he accompanied him on the campaign through Persia. When he reigned in Makedonon 323-317 BCE, he was more of a figurehead. Alexander's son, Alexander IV (born Aug-323 - after his father's death), succeeded to the throne and reigned 317-309 BCE until he was killed by Cassander, who assumed the throne.
