I find it interesting that you just joined ct after this thread started, and that your avatar and mood are the same as the op.

I decided to make my own petition which would call on the US Mint to change its gold and platinum coin offerings. The US Mint is in a position to do this because of the broad authority that the Secretary of the Treasury is given to mint and issue gold and platinum coins. I like the ideas here posted about going back and reissuing classic coin designs and I decided to take a stab at it.

The US Mint has already went back and issued classic coins using this broad authority, the 2009 UHR $20 gold coin being an example. When the US Mint did this, it was very well received by those in the numismatic community and sold really well.

I would appreciate if you signed my petition here: http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/us-mint-needs-to-revise-its-coin-product-lineup.html

Thanks to everyone who supports this cause in advance

    Hi, Peter!

    Do you have a brother?

I do not have a brother. I think what VCC is doing is great and I think that the ideas put out here are good, but were not done constructively. I also think that VCC's ideas should be built upon. For the record, I have been in touch with VCC about his petition.

Oh I don't know about that. I say that because I did it myself years ago, nor was I the first to do it. And it was a successful campaign, that was a first. The campaign involved getting new designs for our coins. But we didn't specify what designs, we just wanted new ones.

In the end I wish I had never done it because of all the crap we ended up getting. It was a perfect example of - be careful what you wish for because you just get it. Well, we got it alright :(

So, YOU'RE the one responsible for a couple of nice designs and a bunch of garbage.

I did have problems with the setup of the petition and I did contact the site administrator about it. But to use that to bring my cause down is flat out wrong. What is more important to this discussion is that there is discourse about the US Mint creating coin products that can be very successful. Not whether or not something is fishy. Having said that, I have said in the past that I have been in touch with VCC about these ideas. But it does not change the fact that the cause is way more important than who is associated with who.

I suggest you gather support for your cause before you run off and make a petition.
By the time you start the petition people should be lining up to sign it.

You're making the same mistake VCC did (remember when he had to change his petition midstream?). Now, even if you get your act together and come up with something people want, you won't get the signatures you need.

The fishiness comment was in regards to the similarity of circumstances (both new users), language ("in a position", "broad authority", etc.), and similar attitudes (self-importance of your cause), used by you and VCC.

In regards to the error message I posted, I'm still receiving it when I try to visit your petition. I even tried refreshing and tried using a different browser.

I don't mind checking out your petition. If I believe it is well thought out and agree that it is a good idea, then I will sign it. But, alas, I cannot get to it...

I saw the petition and the petition was selfish. I'm glad it's gone.

Well I am in touch with VCC about our respective causes. What I did do was use a different website to create the petition, I'll PM you the petition link since I do not want to get into trouble for self promotion.

By the way, VCC's name is Terrence O'Reilly.

I do hope he is OK with your sharing his full name here. Many people would not.

[edit] I go the petition to display, I'm reading it now...

So, just to clarify, these would not be one time commemorative offerings for each proposed rehash of a historical design?
