Thjey LAST had in in 1992 with the uncirculated Olympic silver dollar. I'm not sure when they first did it. But, the St. Gaudin's double eagle has stars on the edge.
Vanwag,there has never been lettering on the edge of a circulating American coin,but there may have been a commemorative silver $1 or another such coin that would have had edge lettering. Aidan.
Actually, there have been circulating US coins with edge lettering. Many of the early large cents and half cents had edge lettering. In some cases, they are worn so smooth that the edge lettering is the only way to tell it was a US coin!

On a comic book forum I post at, one of the Canadians started a thread about these dollars. Interesting read. Lots of people trying to make funnies. Nevertheless, on a comic book forum, Canadians are interested in our coinage. Neat, huh? I think I will call them "Little Caesars" as my form of protest and spite. HAHAHAHA!
