Well, they're not getting rid of the dollar bill, and thus they knew that the damn things aren't going to circulate. If they had gotten rid of the paper dollar, the anthony coin would have circulated and we'd still have that. The Sac is actually a very pretty coin. This whole presidential dollar thing is a waste.
money They will make money off every coin minted, You don't think it will cost $1 to mint each of those coins do you?
There is an article in the latest 'Coin News' from the U.K. that mentions that the Sacagawea $1 is extremely unpopular,& that the Mint is to blame for not telling the American people that it costs less to keep a $1 coin in circulation than it does to keep a $1 note in circulation, because the $1 note is replaced every few months. If the U.S. Bureau of Printing & Engraving stopped printing $1 notes, then the $1 coin would become more popular. We haven't had $1 notes in circulation over here in New Zealand since 1991,but we have got so used to having a $1 coin. Who knows, you may be able to find the first issue of U.S. Presidential $1 coins in change 10,20,or even 30 years down the track. Aidan.
Perhaps, the U.S. members here should lobby their local Members of Congress (after the elections,of course!) for a Bill to be introduced into the House calling for the $1 note to stop being printed.Who knows, you may even get support from a sympathetic Senator as well. What do you think? Your views please. Aidan.
Well I'll tell ya Aidan, the last time I lobbied Congress to try and get something changed involving our coins - this whole dang mess got started. And it's just gotten worse. So this time I'm keepin my mouth shut
I've heard that the Sacagawea is popular overseas in other countries where the the dollar circulates as the local currency (such as Ecuador). I've heard that they like the design of the coin, though I've been wondering what they are going to think of the presidential dollars in comparison.
The real problem with the SAC in my view is that most people do not like carrying change in their pocket or purse/pocketbook. If one already has a wallet to carry their debit cards and credit cards as well as ID then it is no problem to have a few bills as well. As for me, unless I am driving and carry cash in the car for tolls, I could go months without carrying change and seasons without carrrying bills. As for the SAC, it turned me off with the phony gold push. But that is just my view.
We have paid for that same report at least four times now. Every time the report comes back saying the same thing. Eliminate the cent (Value too low and would soon cost more than face to produce) and half dollar (not needed or used), and make a small sized dollar eliminating the paper dollar. Savings will be around 500 million a year. We paid to have the study done in 1974 (Triangle Institute) and ignored it. We did it again in 1979, result was the SBA which failed because we didn't eliminate the note. Again around 1982, result was the zinc cent not it's elimination. And then the GAO study in 2002 which has been ignored. I don't know how much money we have spent to conduct the same study four times, got the same answers each time, and then ignored it
The Canadians said this same thing when they changed over to the dollar coin. They also said this when they changed over to the 2-dollar coin. Now when you ask them, most can't even remember all the fuss and don't even notice the extra change. I think people are worrying a lot over nothing. The average person isn't going to notice a couple more "quarter-size" coins in their pocket or purse?
Maybe(but I doubt it) the lame duck congress will have the guts to pass H.R. 5818: Currency Overhaul for an Industrious Nation (COIN) Act. The bill includes elimination of the cent and a faze out of the $1 bill, among other things. It was introduced back in July and was sent to committee. http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h109-5818
Do we know yet if they're going to do a special edition of these, like they did with the silver state quarters?
This is sort of a weird collection. Is it going to end in 2017, or are they going to keep adding as he president's die? In that case it will never end...
Yea, Dont be surprised if they issue individual proofs, silver proofs, matte finish, gold and platinum Dollar coin sets all special just for us collectors and you can count on at least the gold and platinum issues to be insanely overpriced, especially if you buy them in a set to include the presentation box, which always seems to increase the price of the set by $100. I'll most likely start a set of the new dollars but I'm not buying into every insanely priced set they sit around and put together.
But, for now, the Mint's mulit-million dollar idea will sit in the back of the Bank of America for the next 70 years...
group saw this on the web and some might want to check it out. sorry not very good at cutting pasting or what ever but look at www.usstatequarters.com and on the left side of the menu click the presidential coin. shows some stuff . according to them the first lady will be a $10 24k gold "limited" 10k addition. there will be ciculated and proof version of the presidential coin . I have no idea who these folks are. some of you might i just do not know about them. they have a picture of washington up there but state that is not the actual coin just kind of a picture to show you what it might look like. take it for what it is worth
These were the designs under consideration for the 2007 dollars. The 2008 designs came out a couple weeks ago but I'm not sure that all the designs were ultimatly approved.
