Most likely this. Small businesses pretty much everywhere got destroyed by the shutdowns especially extended ones and countless went out of business. Any coin shop that didn’t have either a huge reserve budget or a significant ability to take advantage of the internet either through their own presence or auctions had little to no shot They’ve been closing down psychical locations all over the place

I could never figure out how any coin shop made it. I bet the lockdown will be the end for many of them.

I agree. Coin shops in the era of the internet make their bread and butter buying, not selling locally. If customers cannot bring in inherited collections, they lose most of their profit. The successful coin stores around here will admit most sales are either over the internet or for one dealer a large monthly World Coin News ad. That is ok, that is how the world is nowadays. I like to stop by and try to cherrypick stuff before it gets listed if I can.

I wonder what those areas will do to dispose of grandpa's coin collection if the local coin dealers go away? You can always ship, but that always gives me the willies thinking of how much shenanigans can go on doing that, (no, there was no Chain Cent in the box you sent me ma'am.....).

    GH#75,
    Another thought,
If you can ask around ( his neighbors, city tax records) and find out who owned the property, I'm sure they would know the shop's status/ history.

For sure, many do a lot with jewelry as well and the coins are kind of a side thing. At this point I really wouldn’t expect any true coin shop that ignores the internet to last for a whole lot longer.

Especially after last year I think many more collectors and such are aware of the internet and it’s benefits. They can sell themselves, have it graded if wanted auctions etc. The one with grandpas coin collection would almost certainly be internet savvy at this point in time, an elderly widow or widower would be the ones most likely to not know what to do but also the ones most likely to be taken advantage of as well unfortunately.
