I have a modern looking penny that has the tails side but not the head. It literally looks like only one side was minted. The side that is blank is perfectly recessed in and has a lip around it where it looks like the metal was pushed out of the press. It's as if someone used a circular saw and cut the heads side out. I was not sure how much this coin would be worth if anything. Any information would be greatly appreciate.
The upset rim is still there. Google 'Magician's Coin'. It's impossible that it is a mint error. In order to strike a coin, two dies, a hammer die and an anvil die are needed. Striking a coin with only one die is exactly like trying to clap with one hand.
Thanks! I just looked up Magician's Coin and that has to be it. No wonder a dime fit into it so nicely! Oh well!
We have one with a Wheat back instead of a Memorial back. Where did you get it? We got ours in a counting machine bag at a bank.
WOW, so glad I found this page. I found one that came in our work change at a library this week. I was so curious of what it was. So I guess there is no value but interesting.
