Hey everybody, I'm looking for a penny error list online and can't find anything! I'm very new to collecting and even newer to this site, any advice or words of wisdom are greatly appreciated!:smile
you can look in the back of the red book for a list of errors in the red book it is under the heading Misstrikes and errors. You may also purchase the cherry pickers guide to find out about errors and varieties Vol l has pennies in it.
Thank you, I'm so new at coining that I haven't even got the red book yet! It's coming for my birthday tomorrow. I haven't heard of the cherry pickers guide though.
Hope you have a wonderful day tomorrow and many more trips around the sun! Good luck with your collecting errors can be fun to collect . Paddy
If you are referring to VARIETIES, I would suggest coppercoins.com, doubleddie.com, and lincolncentresource.com. As far as errors go, here is a good link. http://www.lincolncentresource.com/Errors/Lincoln_Cent_Errors.html
My advice may be applicable or not. I gather you are very new to coin collecting and wish to hunt varieties and errors. If you are pursuing such a question with slabbed or attributed coins, then a list would be my first step. If you intend to hunt through bags of cents, or prowl ebay and other auction sites, I think you be be better suited to read as much as possible on the subject. Much is on the internet as noted by previous posters, but if you have some available money for book references, I would recommend the DVD compilation by Billy Crawford "Lincoln cent varieties" or the printed version vol 1, which goes to 1988 ( mine is used weekly), and a favorite, Wexler and Flynn's "The Authoritative Reference on Lincoln Cents" and the Cherrypicker's Vol. 1. Many collectors think books are too expensive, but these are well worth their price. Secondly, finding varieties in bags or packet change is tough going unless you are familiar with the normal cents and how minting process works and what post mint damage looks like. Then you can take a 1000 cents and look at each one and any that look different, put aside , and then study them carefully. Spend some time thinking about each difference and if it could be a variety such as a RPM, DD, etc., or sometimes similar MDD ( machine doubling damage) and PMD ( post mint damage). It takes time and effort to become smart in this area. There are many archived articles on this site that can be accessed by the search function. Best wishes and welcome to the forum! Jim
Just to add, here's another good place to further your education. http://www.conecaonline.org/index.html
Oh man, forgot one of the newest and most detailed error sites available! error-ref.com should have just about anything you need to know about errors. Keep up the hunt!
Thanks, you guys have been a ton of help. I bought a roll of 50 Wheaties from a pawn shop and the guy didn't know anything about em. When I got somewhere I could check them out I found that a lot of them had errors and some dbl dies, I expect someones relative died that collected and they knew nothing about them so they sold em. bought for 2 bucks already found some cool pennies.
There was a site where you could go and type in the year and check all of the error varieties for that year. I had the link on my old computer but it is gone now. Does anyone know what site I'm talking about?

dusty that's a great list... but.. like we all know he should educate himself first..and realize some times for the things we like , and even in decent grades some people try to over charge you...if your going to deal in coins learn to detect counterfeits and fakes.....
