Afraid not cp99. The mint has modified the penny more times than I have fingers so what you are finding are just variations of the cent out there. Yes you make a good point GDJMSP and I have found some information that is pretty surprising to me. I found this on a pdf file "The main determinant of high red metal pricescontinues to be the present condition of relative shortage, and that is proper of the solid fundamentals that support it –increasing consumption and supply. The weakness of the US dollar in front of other international currencies has been added to this situation. The American currency marked again a record of depreciationwith respect to the euro and the yen, reaching values of 1.364 US$/€ and 103.16 ¥/US$." Now at the end of the file was the big shocker to me... It has the average monthly copper prices from 2002 on up and the price of copper per pound was at around $0.72 a pound in December '02 and within 2 years it has fully doubled! http://www.cochilco.cl/english/productos/periodicos/comentario_semanal/english_20041231.pdf
Yeah it's fun to see how they've made our c.2000 coinage(speaking in terms of style and relief) into junk. http://www.coinpeople.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=10
