Here is one, Moen1305, but you are right, we don't have the internet yet, this was posted a year ago and just arrived by pony express, reason why you didn't noticed before.
Plus, I'm always glad to read about us, even nice words

I dont mind, like it was said ealier, we all know a penny is one cent and a nickel is 5 cents, etc...Most people know a Quid is a Pound. There are MANY things that have multiple names in english, I would say because of the nature of america and how they borrow and invent from other nations and cultures and how certain terms used in one or two nations both become a standard. Like when I went to England to work and I asked for a wrench and saw a bunch of blank stares, after a bit of discussion we realize what I needed was a 'spanner' :)

I think all people as they grow learn the different names of our money, there arent many denominations and there are many ways to say dollar :)

Now if you were griping about ROADS with 3 names or more then I would have said hell yeah! In Houston there are highways and roads that have 2 names or more which end up confusing people. So you might have I-## as the number name, then they give the road a name like so-and-so freeway (usually named after a person or something they want to honor) and THEN there are those roads that are labeled with a # - then they name different PARTS of the road different memorial names...you never turned off but all of a sudden the road name just changed and has the same road ## :)

    But I diverge...

I am just concerned about foreigners who did not grow up with our coinage. Their question must be, what the heck is a "nickel"? Or a dime for that matter?

An easier explanation, for me anyway, is that the American colonies spent real pennies until we chased out those pesky Redcoats. When we finally got around to making out own money, I am sure that "penny" was still a common term for those little copper coins even though we called them cents, which means 100th (of a dollar). That is suspicuously close to centime, which the French use, and we know how everyone feels about them....

Oh no, there IS one on the Forum. I guess we all have to be on our best behavior now.

On a serious note, I was in Paris twice and have to say the people were just fine, so I think it is a bad rap the French get sometimes. Also, speaking of coins, France has had some of the best coin designs in Europe. The sower (or whatever she is called) WAS gorgeous, and presumably the idea for our own Walking Liberty. I must admit that I am not happy with the stylized version on the Euro coins, though.

By the way...French banknotes were always unique - there is nothing similar to them in terms of the feel of the paper.

I'm glad you're here my friend. Nothing better than poking fun at the French. All in good fun of course. :hail:

thats true with any country you go to. You need to learn the money and if there is something you dont understand you ask...I had to ask what exactly a quid was and people were happy to tell me. I worry more about figuring how much of your contries money you are actualy spending since one pound is quite a bit more than a dollar and one Norge Kroner is worth quite a bit less.
