The PCGS sub finally arrived. So you all know the drill. This is part 1 of 5. As I like to keep my guess the grades interesting, this one will be no different. Please guess the original grade and the new grade (originally NGC and now PCGS). Are they the same or different? Here I am including three photos (a PCGS TrueView, a photo from a previous owner, and the photos from Great Collections in the original holder).
Ok, I will bite: incredibly nice toning. Not wear but weak strike, typical of an 1883o. Original NGC—MS 63*. PCGS re-grade—64+ (bump of near-monster toning). If it were a bit more lustrous, I would say MS 65.
Oh man, I really like this one! Original NGC MS-64 ★, now PCGS MS-64+. I think they gave the + for a bump in color.
After all 5 parts are done, I’m thinking of doing a thread where we pick our favorite coin from the five. This first one is a strong contender for me but I like all five.
1883 O is certainly not known to be well struck, in my experience it is probably the poorest of strikes of the entire series (a number of which are O mints..?) I say MS64+ But I’d need a video clip to get a perfect assessment
1885o is also a contender for worst of a bunch of bad New Orleans strikes. Both had major die issues, and high mintages.
Nah. You have good photos to grade the coin from those. Videos actually complicate the process. If you can’t grade from that group of pictures, spend more time practicing, as they are good ones.
