Paranoia isn't necessarily a huge drawback about your prized possessions. Get a gun, carry your valuables with a handcuff attached to a briefcase, and then go to a coin dealer too wealthy to try to rip you off. That's often the challenge with secrets, who are you going to trust, finally you have to trust someone.

I watched "Caine Mutiny" recently, great movie. Moral of the story seems to be the Caine ship needed discipline but the sailors were not ready for it. So when the new captain came they marginalized, isolated him and he became crazy--sad.
