Buying silver coins for under $10 is one thing, but buying modern silver PR Roosies, for $7??? What exactly IS your angle???? I don't mean to be rude to a new collector, but the way you've been tossing $$ down the drain, your tuition is going to be expensive. I have to question the 1800 dollar, for the $5 you threw at the old lady....if you knew THAT was a fake, how can't you know the others aren't???? You really need to slow down, no STOP buying, before the only genuine thing you own is junk silver.... before your grandkids need to see silver crest over $100 oz.

This is a little extreme. He got a nearly flawless silver coin slabbed for $7. I know collectors who spend a lot more on a lot worse.

Only if silver goes up and beats inflation . What I was talking about were those 5 coin anniversary set that hardly anyone could get because of a foul up at the mint , I think they sold for $350 and people were getting $1000 or more for them , but those are rare occurrences . I just don't look at coins as investments unless you flip them for more money right away and keep doing it . But that takes skill and knowledge and contacts to be able to support yourself and a family .

Nearly flawless? Look at it again. And extreme? Buy suggesting he stop buying? Others, in 1 of the few threads the OP has posted, have suggested the same thing. C'mon....he's buying silver at the VERY HIGH, buying coins while drunk....claims to know a fake 1800 S$1, but gets sucked in by bad 1908 Indian cents? He SHOULD stop buying until he gains more knowledge. Is there really any other suggestion before he goes broke buying fake crap (or, modern silver crap)????

edited to correct (or modern silver crap) to (modern PR silver Roosies with splooge on them at $7)

I'm sorry...did I hear $20 ASE's, and I quote, "There seem to be a ton of those out there." $20 ASE's??? Maybe from Alibaba.

@dallas101, do you plan on buying what you LIKE, what you can AFFORD, or what you think you can MAKE MONEY on? There is a world of difference, and the intersection point is very small.

If you are here to "collect", then CT can offer you help in the pursuit of this enjoyable hobby. If you are here to make money, you will leave here sad and poorer than when you joined.

For your sake, and our efforts sake, I hope you want to collect what you like. If you want to get-rich-quick, I here a member here is starting a Ponzi scheme.

Not me, but I added to it. :)

I thought you said you liked Half Dollars? Why you buying crappy proof modern dimes?

    Get something like this:

    EBAY LINK

    Make an offer on it.

An economical angle, investments, or positive returns, apparently.

Unless you have very deep pockets to buy extreme rarities, coins are simply not worth the time and risk as investments. If you're very careful about what you buy and how you sell it, you might make a little lunch money, but that's about it. I've done some selling on eBay, and made a little profit, but it's probably what you would call being a dealer-hobbyist.

You want REAL investments that are going to make a REAL difference in your portfolio over the long term? Start putting money into a Roth IRA and mutual funds. Those are investments. Coins are a hobby.

No, but what was already there can become more visible after it was slabbed.

Also, it's not uncommon for coins to be over-graded either.

Joining in the dog pile here...Dallas, take it easy on the new purchases. Learn more. And stay away from eBay when you get in your cups! (I've been there! Haha!)

Woke up with a hangover, agree that beer & eBay don't mix and resent being accused of 'trolling' but understandable.

    Hello Dallas101,

There are some good coin shows in your area (I think). Just last week there was a coin show in Ft Worth with something like 50 dealers attending.

There are also some great coin dealers around you. One of my most trusted dealers is based near you. You can send me a PM if you want his name. Here are some US coins I've purchased from this dealer.

Whoa, I didn't call you a troll. Easy man! I was simply suggesting to slow down on the new purchases. Hey, it was less then $7, that's like what, a beer or two at the bar? No big loss.

No, I didn't say that you did. It was @Numismania I think but it's kinda blur now. It's all good. I DO need constructive criticism and I rather you be frank than sweetcoat.
