I have several pieces which are certified, and I'm considering sending them to PCGS for crossover. They are in two categories: 1) Slabbed by lower tier services and almost certainly overgraded - they are currently slabbed by NTC and NNC as Mint States - MS63s and MS64s. I think one is probably AU58 and the others MS60+. PCGS allows one to opt for a "minimum acceptable crossover grade", so I have put those lower grades on the PCGS form. These are decent pieces - common date $5 indian / liberty, $10 Indian, and a trade dollar. Why send 'em in ? b/c I bought these early on, when I first got back into the hobby. I didn't know much about the grading services, and felt I was getting a bargain. I now buy exclusively top-tier slabs, and want to have one unified set, so I'm comparing apples to apples. Also, I think top-tier slabs are more legit on the market when it comes time to sell. Do you think PCGS will cross 'em ? 2) Slabbed by NGC - These are nice pieces - 19th century proofs (3c silver MS63 cameo, seated lib 10c MS64 cameo). I want to maintain that grade or higher. Why send 'em in ? I respect NGC greatly, but when it comes to very small pieces, I much prefer the PCGS packaging. Plus, PCGS requires at least 5 pieces for submission. Also, these are very nice and may move up a grade. Anybody have any experience in that area ? Do they ever increase the grade of an NGC piece ? Here are a few pics of the NGC pieces... Thanks for sharing any experience you may have.
