    Hello,

I picked up a 1780 SF Thaler Austria PCGS VF25 few years ago off of eBay. The Thing is that it’s not attributed as a restrike or an early restrike so that makes me wonder if it’s an original but to my knowledge the SF didn’t appear on the original Thalers but only on the restrikes. This isn’t my area of expertise so I really don’t know. Any information that you can give me would be helpful. Please see the attached photos and please let me know if you have any questions for me. Thanks.

    Best Regards,

The PCGS Certification Number Lookup states that it is a Early Restrike

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

Isn't there a pretty big price difference between the original and the restrikes?

If you didn't know what you were buying, why did you buy it?

Maybe just because it's a really neat looking coin?. These coins were so popular in Eritrea up into the 20th century that the Italians decided to make their own (for their colony). ERTallero1918.jpg

Well, you’re under the impression that I paid a lot for it. I only paid about $60 for it when silver was in the high 30s per ounce. So, finding out it’s a restrike isn’t really a big loss for me. This thread was only to satisfy my own curiosity.

Looks to me like an Indian re-strike from mid 20th century. Not worth a premium in this grade.

    I agree it's a neat-looking coin. Big too: 41mm diameter. And 83% silver.

In the 1980's, I bought 2 of 'em at a coin shop in Austria:

Pretty sure mine are proof coins -- frosty features & mirror fields (dulled a bit with hazing).

Cool feature is an edge inscription: IUSTITIA ET CLEMENTIA (Justice and Clemency).

Although maybe my proof versions have more value, these high-mintage restrikes aren't worth much. But I like 'em a LOT better than many of my other collectible "bullion" coins.
