Okay, I just took out the coin and camera again, just to see what you were talking about "all those breaks" on the face. As like before, I don't see that much you are seeing? Please point them out? I only see a couple?
Yep! And that's the only one I see? I mean the face isn't completely covered with it, is it? If PCGS graded this a MS-65, then I believe that there could be a couple of marks on the "edge" of the face.
it seems to be all over the obverse. Now Doug will probably float by and tell us that these are superficial markings much worse in the photo than in the hand and not considered detrimental but I'll buy that for a 62. For a 65 I have a problem with that. Ruben
To me they look more like scuffs than bag marks. The Carson City one, Ryan posted in another thread, had quite a few bag marks on her but all I see on this one is a few scuffs and I can't see how that would bring it down to MS-64? :kewl: Ribbit
I'm agreeing with Toad here. What you are seeing is not "damage", more like die streaks, which wouldn't bring the grade down unless there were all over
Ruben the marks you have circled and are asking about are frost breaks. Typically Morgans have frosted devices, this makes them different from most, if not all, business strike coins. And when the coins are bagged that frost can be rubbed off by the coins rubbing against one another in the bag. Now normally coins with a lot of frost breaks will not be graded higher than 64. But frost breaks are not treated like bag marks. Typically bag marks create a hit or ding in the metal, frost breaks do not. So they don't count against the grade like bag marks do.
As much as it pains me I have to agree with Doug, the coin is overgraded. I would have no problem seeing that coin in an MS64 holder considering that what look like bag marks are actually luster grazes and the reverse is very solid, but MS65 is a stretch. Please note that I reserve the right to change my mind if I ever see the coin in hand. Photos can make luster grazes appear much worse than they really are and the severity of the grazes depends greatly upon the view angle. Take another photo from a different angle so we can get a better look at the obverse focal areas. Please!
Here is a better pic. It is still showing a bit, becuase I am using a bright florescent lamp to take these pics.
One more factor is it is in a plastic holder so that can cause distortions, that can make the coin not appear as good as it really is. I always try to take that into account, when looking at a slabbed coin pic taken by someone that isn't experienced with taking pics of coins in slabs. At least he didn't scan it. Ribbit
If you were to look at my latest photo of the Morgan, you will see that the chatter is hardly visible, which is how it is in hand. I think PCGS graded it MS-65 becuase the chatter is very faint. In my earlier pics, they were really visible and looked bold becuase it was directly under my florescent lamp, which brought everything on the coin out and really visible. Thank you everyone for all of your opinions and comments!
Grading argument aside, it's an awesome coin! :thumb: I'm so glad to see your collection growing so nicely! It seems like yesterday when I first met you on here and I remember the things you were buying back then and I am amazed at how far you've come in such a short time! Ribbit
Yep! Only a few months time, and I went from buying barber quarters for an "expensive" price of $5, to buying UNC Morgans for $100+++
You are a good example of why this Forum is so popular. You have learned so much and yet this higher education didn't cost you an arm and leg, just a few fingys. Ribbit
