I was a big fan of Rome: Total War, but I actually preferred the expansion -'Barbarian Invasion', much better. The reason why was because I always felt in the original 'Rome' (set in the Republican/early Imperial era) the Roman and Greek/Hellenistic factions dominated militarily a bit too much. I actually really enjoy playing the Barbarian Invasion expansion (starting in the 4th century) because if you play as the Romans things are genuinely hard for you. If you play as the Western Empire it's extremely challenging at the start of the game, but very fun. You have a negative income, your armies are small and spread out and there are huge barbarian armies massing on your borders - fleeing the distant menace of Attila - who WILL find you and DOES intend to do you in! The Eastern Empire has a much stronger starting position, though with them you face the Sassanids from the outset...
not set in ancient times; but your are doing yourself a disservice if you don't check out the RPG Disco Elysium....brilliant
Assassin's Creed Valhalla is a complete drag, and rather boring, but it is a very beautiful representation of post Roman Britain - instead of Odyssey and Origins's heyday setting, this is rather a post-apocalyptic world, where the Roman towns are ruined and steeped in mystery. I would not play the game through, but when the Discovery Tour comes out, I would highly recommend spending $20 for it.
I have been a big fan for a decade now. I play on the top two difficulties and surely enjoy it. Trajan is my go to… or Seondeok
