The account we're talking about was over ten years old when she was single. She left it dormant, thinking it was closed with no money in it, not realizing it had $5 (needed to open an account in our state) was still left in it. Apparently that was enough for the Credit Union to considerate it active. When she got married they opened a checking and savings at the same Credit Union and used it as their prime accounts.

PayPal kept sending, over the ten year period a request for an $8.98 purchase to the wrong account, we still don't know how they got the dormant account info, my daughter's family used their CHECKING ACCOUNT for PayPal. During that 10 year period, PayPal never contacted my daughter for their $8.98 nor did the bank notify my daughter of the numerous requests for the $8.98, they just kept adding insufficient funds charges for each request. Those charges now total over $300.

Now that it's come to light, the Credit Union, on it's own, took the $300 overdraft charge from their checking account and paid PayPal their $8.98 from the checking account. The Credit Union claims its PayPal's problem for billing the wrong account and should pay the Credit Union the $300 and PayPal says the Credit Union should have notified my daughter 10 years ago about the first overdraft and they should waive the $300. The amount does not make it worthwhile to hire an attorney, but a friend who's a criminal attorney is looking into the matter Pro Bono, because he thinks the whole situation is ridiculous and both the Credit Union and PayPal are wrong. I'll post any future developments.

You know that little thing inside your head that keeps you from saying things you shouldn't? Yeah, I don't have one of those.
