Just watched a Pawnstars program where a guy sells them an 1861 C $5 gold. What got me is when the seller mentions offhandedly "I probably shouldn't have been carrying this around in my pocket should I..."

They called in an "expert" who declared it genuine and said it was a $15,000 coin. The seller took $8,000.

I saw that one yesterday. I too winced when the fellow mentioned it was in his pocket.

Why anyone would take a high end item to Pawn Stars is beyond me.
Do you like getting half of what it is worth?

The thing that got me was how quickly the “expert” determined it was genuine. When dealing with a coin worth thousands of dollars, I would be take a bit longer and be a bit more methodical and meticulous about examining it.

But as we know, it’s a staged show.

I hear that show is heavily scripted. That would answer a lot of the questions regarding the coin, where it came from and what it was supposedly worth of purchased for.

But I enjoy watching it nevertheless.

I do too. Not long ago there was a post here. Can’t remember the item or the post but the fellow said he had been contacted by the show to purchase the item for one of their programs. Sure, it is all scripted. But I love tuning in and seeing the cool old stuff too.
