On last week's episode, the one where Big Hoss bought the fake Coke sign, a guy came in and pawned an Indian flax bow. When he came back to pick it up, he was given a different one. The one he pawned had blue beads, and the one he picked up had red beads.

is an interesting show, as I understand, the Harison's and Chum Lee aren't there that much. I do enjoy watching the different items that come in, but found myself rooting for the owner's to tell them "no thank's" and walk out....I do think allot of that is staged though, besides...the Harison's and Chum Lee now make their money from doing the show...

I fully agree. I imagine for a higher dollar item the store might have it authenticated to make sure they don't get taken...but I doubt "experts" got called in too often before the show started. I believe Rick said in one episode early on that he prefers to have the item left in the store and the expert to come by without the seller there. But, I have yet to see this happen in the show.

Of course you would, everyone would like to. Unfortunately getting top dollar takes time. The beauty of pawn shops is they are very fast. People who sell at pawn shops are willing to substitute top dollar for cash now because they need it now. This is how pawn shops get items so cheap.

What pawn store owner would come to your house to look at a corn husker?

Google Pawn Stars forum and you'll get a History Channel forum. Lots of people chewing up that show.

I'm sure American Pickers is the same. It's all a set up.

Rick sure paid more for the Treasure Trove Ingot than he had to. He could have gotten that $24k bar for $20-22k easy. But he brought in the expert and paid $37k. If I ever need to use a pawn shop, I would go there first. But the coin dealers I have been to, I wasn't able to do any business at all. Just too far apart. Same with the few Pawn Shops I visited. Somehow, I think Las Vegas has a lot of truly desperate people that are the customers. And I believe some shops take every advantage.

I believe Pawn Stars was originally intended to be an actual HBO show, that was supposed to be uncensored.
There is a video on YouTube that shows all of them smoking and cursing, it is around 10 minutes or so, maybe a bit less. You guys can check it out if you want, wouldn't be appropriate to post link here.

I have personally done business with pawn shops for a long time and it's common knowledge that if you're selling something to a pawnshop you're gonna get ripped! If you get a loan you're gonna pay high interest but if you buy from them you may get a really good deal it just depends. As far as the show goes, that store is very well connected to all types of experts and specialists and in my humble opinion a store like that is extremely rare. Their pawnshop is probably more rare than any gold coins they've come across at least when compared to pawnshops of Sacramento or surrounding areas. Even in Reno, I have never come across a pawnshop like theirs. :D Great show but I often wonder how much of what they do was created for TV and what were they buying before TV? Could be they have always bought hard to sell items that other pawnshops won't touch and that's why they got the TV show, I don't know. :) my 2 cnts

Pawn shops are there for emergency money. You do not have to sell! You can Pawn and come back later to pay back the loan, then you get your precious item back.
Most pawn shops sell their purchased items on eBay! They research the sale prices. Most sell at pretty low prices. They do not want to keep the stuff they buy, just turn it over.
I am positive pawn shops lose plenty of money on items like electronics, that they buy, that the owner KNOWS the item has an intermittent problem. The pawn shop sells it as working, then has to refund for defective merchandise. The seller is the only one with a profit - the pawn shop loses money in cases like this.
Pawn shops average out profits, I am sure they do not make a net 600% profit on total sales each year!

Iam not knocking the show itself, It,s very entertaining!! and yes when
You go to a pawn shop you will most likely have to bend over and cough
LOL :) My main reason for starting the thread in the first place was to
Take a look at the practice of fair profit!! We have all been there at
One time or another needing money, Sure there a quick outlet for cash
    But at what price???

The Coke sign was a fake. Big Hoss should have read the tag taped to the back of it. The pawn shop is real, the show is real, but they are two different things. Put them together and you have a staged show where the producers control everything. The Coke sign was a prop. Did you notice when the old man and Rick told Big Hoss the thing was fake? Big Hoss looked guilty before he was told it was fake, then he felt bad and offered to pay for it. Then Rick and the old man said don't worry about it. Live and learn.
That has never happened on the show before. Usually Big Hoss will cuss and scream, Rick will chew him out, and the old man will call him a dumb***.
Pawn Stars does not represent a real pawn shop. It's a TV show. It's entertainment. People like to watch it, including me.

I would love to go to that store a year after the show ends. I wonder if they would get an expert to come in and look at my rusty, beat up Pepsi ice cooler.

Do you have any idea what it costs to run any kind of brick and mortar? Have you ever sweat out a cash flow crisis? If not, maybe you should stop assuming what is fair and reasonable, and mostly stop with posting anything about being ripped off.

Yes to all your questions! I think we all know what the difference is
Between fair ethical business practices making a reasonable profit
    And one that doesnt!!:computer:

And this is one that does.
This pawn shop doesn't force the customer to do anything and they can walk away at any time, and many people do, and guess what, some of them come crawling back to Rick and the gang and asking if that offer is still on the table, and they could lower the price, but guess what, they keep that first offer on the table.
They are a fair and balanced pawn shop, and the customer has the answer yes or no, while Rick has to find out a fair price.

I'm not going to go into what I've said before about Pawn Stars being a reality TV show, nothing else. Just like Wife Swap, Man vs. Wild, and Judge Judy. It's ridiculous to say what's ethical and what's not on a television show.

But as for pawn shops in general, what everybody says here is right on. Yes, you're going to get ripped off no matter what you sell, but these guys need to make money to support your business. You're not going to get any deals. Same goes if you try to sell your coins to a coin store. Same goes for the cash for gold guys. Same goes for the payday loan outfits. Same goes if you have a garage sale. You don't have to sell, but if you need the money, these places are very useful. Don't expect any deals.

There is no ethics involved in business. Businesses are there to make money. Your satisfaction is secondary. People gripe because they're not getting what they want at pawn store, but people also complain about gas prices, their electric bill, their property taxes, and the price of milk. There's no deals in the real world.
