I would consider myself a fan of Pawn Stars but as the show continues I find myself becoming more and more upset with the way Rick and the Boys do business trying to down every item with profits exceeding 500% !!! you have to wonder is this honest profit or a tremendous RIP OFF!!! based on what ive seen i will have to go with the latter!!
Rick has been there 25 years, he knows how people work, plus in my opinion he puts alot of pressure when he has someone like corey or the old man next to him, two people haggling you can be way more intimidating than one, and the cameras sure dont help, but the customer can walk away at any time, also you got that big security guard antwan, i'd be scared walking in there lol.
I think while criticizing the ethics of others you shouldn't use a racial epitaph in the process. Pawn shop owners low ball everyone because they need to guarantee profits and liquidity. They are not experts on everything and sometimes they do get burned. They must have good profit margins in order to absorb the losses they incur on their bad purchases. They also need negotiating room in their sales process to ensure that they have enough liquidity to ensure cash flow. Did you see the episode where the old man put a $500 bonus out for whomever had the highest profit margins for the month? All of the profit margins listed before the contest were less than 20% for each salesperson (including Rick). So while you may see one item that they got 500%, the average profit margins are less than 20%. I have no problem with that. What say you!
Point being the taken advantage of people who for the most part are Down and out and need the money just to live!! I would describe this close to inflating the price of bottled water after A flood from a $1.49 to $20.00 sure you dont have to buy it but if You dont you will drink from a contaminated well and die from a Horrable disease some choice!!
on that episode where they had the contest here were the profit margins that they achieved striding towards the 500 dollars: Old man: 34% Corey: 24% Ricky: 22% or 20% (i forgot) Chum Lee: 16%
I don't have issues with the margins they get, but I do find myself more and more often questioning the reality of what the show is about. Many of the individual sales just seem to be set up, with some guy finding the ark of the covenant in his grandmother's attic, bringing it in, Rick knowing "a guy who's an expert in the field", etc, etc. I suppose it's TV, but I don't think it's as real as they imply. Dave
Do you think I made that number up? It came straight from the mouth of the old man during a recent episode. He was complaining that the profit margins were too low. Those are the profit margins after the contest. Before the contest, nobody was above 20%. IIRC, Rick was 17%, Corey 12%, Chumly 8%.
Dave i couldnt agree more!!! Everything is so rehursed and looks So phony, maybe Rick can call in an expert on this subject....LOL
So you believe everything they say? Based on what i see on the show I would have to question those figures
It seems its a very popular show, I watch its interesting but some of The things that go on there are little below board! Just my opinion!!
They dont really show enough variety on the show, its mostly guns, weapons, or random people who dont know what they have.
How about just applying your own logic to your own argument. You readily admit that most of what you see on the show is staged and is the most interesting of their transactions. You don't get to see all of the mundane items they buy and sell on a regular basis for small profits. Why do you believe that the highlights you see on the show are indicative of how they typically do business. You can question those figures all you like. I am not going to waste my time worrying about whether the old man is lying to the general public about the shop's profit margins. I will believe them until I have a reason not to.
