The first recorded guerrilla action took place on New Years Day, 1942.</p><p><br /></p><p>&nbsp;This caught the attention of Col. John P. Horan, Commanding Officer of the 43rd Infantry Philippine Scouts. Cushing was given a commission of Major, and upon the fall of Bataan his unit was designated the 121st Infantry by Gen. Wainwright.</p><p><br /></p><p>Maj. Cushing died 19 Sep 1942 when he was wounded in a Japanese ambush.
