The Hawaiian notes you picked up, along with all Silver Certificates, should be referred to by blocks S-C, L-C or Star notes. There is no such thing as a Hawaiian $1 C-S or C-L block..... those are backwards. All of the small size Red Seals (normal and stars) end with the letter "A", so they are referred to as A-A, B-A, C-A, etc and Star notes. Hope this helps Travis.
Since I've actually started keeping tabs on this thread I have had a major increase in the desire to begin collecting large size notes... Any recommendations for what is on the cheaper side? I assume a '23 silver cert or a black eagle?
The 1923 $1 SC is much more affordable in mid-grade than the Black Eagle in a similar grade. My advise, or my opinion is to try and buy a note that is problem free with good eye appeal rather than buying a note you can afford now....even if it means waiting until you you can save up more funds for a quality note. Don't buy rags just to say you have one.
Good point. I think I'm going to take your advice and save up for a little while. Thanks again Steve. Is eBay just a good place to check or can you think of any other places for '23 silver certs anywhere from medium to high grade depending on price.
Thanks MEC2! I'm finding out quickly that this can be just as costly (or more) than coins. I'm just trying to make a small collection of the notes that I really like. I agree with SteveInTampa. Avoid the lower cost problem notes. I find I have to pay more for problem free notes in a nice condition, but you end up with something that is more satisfying than an old beat up note with pinholes, tears, missing corners, etc. With that said I'm doubtful I'll ever be able to afford some things (such as Onepapa, Bison, Education notes, etc.) in the condition that I'd like to have them in.
Once again, just my opinion, if you want quality buy a graded note with a *PQ designation, which means the note has not been washed or pressed. It will always retain it's value, and sells easily when you want/need to upgrade. Ebay is fine, and so is the Heritage Tuesday Night Auctions, and Lyn Knight, Spink and other auction houses.
After getting my first graded note (Black Eagle above) I'm not sure I want any more graded ones. Nothing against the TPGs, but I really don't like the flimsy plastic they mount them in, and those don't fit in well with my plans to frame them. Just my own opinion on what I plan for what will be a small collection. But, I'll agree that graded by a TPG does increase value and they are easier to sell.
Here travis take me as a perfect example of what these guys are saying.I have 5 large size frn 1914's 3-$20's 1- $10 and 1-$5.The best grade of them is probadly fine-15.I got this "rag" cause it was cheap of course and wanted it at the time. But now that i have gotten my feet wet and am alittle more experienced at what to look for and whats best for my collection i want graded good eye appeal notes instead of a note like this.I love the large size national currency notes and the portholes and bisons but only a good quality example...friends dont let friends buy rags :thumb:
I like how the large size FRN's have blue seals instead of green. Since day 1 or currency collecting for me, I have literally never put any attention or thought into anything before series 1928, so this will deffinetely be a new, fun adventure into the large size world, which by all means is very different aside from modern sized notes. I still have a bit to go on the BEP money factory store, but I'm actually going to save up a bit while also accomplishing all of my goals at the money factory store. Thanks a bunch to all those that have provided excellent advice and great encouragement.
I want to frame some too but I think that is a good use of lower quality notes where the wear and tear adds character to the display piece. Plus don't have to worry about it being damaged while being framed.
That makes sense, and it'll fit in well with my budget too. I still want as good a condition as I can afford, and will avoid the really bad ones.
Back to Greece for today's crack of the whip. This is another positively huge note, a little wider and a bit taller than the old large size US note. This is also another ABNCo note, so the engraving and colors are top notch. The beat up drunk on the front of the note is I believe the first President of the Greek bank - not sure who thought his mug on the front was such a great idea, I prefer the ruins of the lion guardians on the back myself...
Today, from Olympus, I bring you ZEUS! And the Greek amphiteater... a very nice late year design. On the back, I bring you - Greek chic! Wearing full body clothing to cover typical Greek hairiness... don't be surprised when she takes that off and looks like Bigfoot...
Oh i think we need to give her the benifit of the doult mec she dont look half that bad.A beauitful girl to accompany a great looking note. Are these high denomination notes still relativity cheap?
And today, I am going green... lime green. I got this note with that spectacular $5 mule I posted. In fact, It was this lime green that caught my attention, the $5 was just a lucky let-me-just-poke-around pickup... still love the lime green seals.
