Does this count as a new acquisition? It’s not from the bank though...What I thought was odd is that parts are upside down.

You know that's a novelty item, right? All it is is defaced currency.

    At least worth face value!

I’m wondering why Jefferson’s portrait was applied upside down...

Oh yeah. I also got an early Easter basket filled with money...there’s just one problem...
Just going to add that the shredded bills came from the actual mint.

I didn’t understand why that was done like that either.

Actually they didn't. They mint doesn't do bills.

Being defaced does the bill still have face value?

  18. Interesting Notes. I knew that there were "Silver Certificates" but never knew the caption: "(Payable) One Silver Dollar". Never knew there was such a creature.

The idea was that one could go to any bank and redeem a silver certificate for one dollar in silver coin (whether it be an actual silver dollar or just fractions thereof)

Pretty much the same thing happens today: although it isn't captioned as such, Federal Reserve Notes are essentially redeemable for face value in metal (be it nickel, copper, zinc, or combinations thereof)
In other words, you can take your dollar bill to the bank and get 1 dollar in metal coins in return

  20. Thanks but I'd rather have the 'real' "Silver"!

I recently bought these 1953B $10 Silver Certificates. They were from the last pack of small-size $10 SCs printed. The ending serial number for the series was A12240000A.
