Hey guys, what’s your priority when looking at a note to purchase? I’m in a bit of a dilemma with some notes I have my eyes on. Would you rather go for a lower graded note with no comments or a significantly higher graded note with comments on the back slab if they were around the same ballpark?
For me, it depends on visual appeal. I'm not necessarily an "investor," as I don't expect to make any money, and often lose money if I ever sell. I look for notes that are pretty. If it's crisp and has a clear image but has a stain, I would prefer that over a low grade one that's tough to make out.
It depends, as every situation is different but i would go lower graded Most of the time as comments or remarks kill value
Valid advice. I’m more of a hobbyist and don’t look at my purchases as future investments. That’s exactly how I feel. I’d rather it be visually appealing than having to look at folds that run through the image. Sound advice. But I think for me it’s more about the aesthetics rather than worrying about holding value.
Comments and Remarks, will usually tell about Major problems in the note These would be stains, graffiti , Repairs etc, those would be allot more distracting then some folds. But you did not elaborate on what grades your comparing, i think if you Comparing an A/U grade to gem its a no brainer, A/U everytime If you would give us an example of the actual notes that would be a huge Plus.
Great question....I've been asking about that directly and indirectly with my posts. I agree with Steve...go for the best, highest-quality note you can buy. Avoid problem notes. Go back to my HAWAII WW II note.....I got a 67 with a 3-digit SN. Would it be better to have had a PMG 58 or even a 45 if it meant a SN < 100 ? How about PMG 35 with SN < 10 ? Eh.....I think QUALITY is always the most important thing to strive for, assuming you aren't paying a ridiculous amount because the scarcity is just too great. Some notes or coins you can't get Gem Quality or above because it simply is too much for 99.9% of us.
One thing I have almost as a hard-and-fast rule with currency (and it's becoming one with coins, too): if the bill (or coin) looks notably mediocre (bad margins, lots of scratches) I really prefer the lower-graded item over the one that may be in the low-60's. I know there might be problems with a minor fold/crease or waves in a bill if it is PMG 58 or lower....but if it is tought to see, I almost prefer it OUTRIGHT (let alone for the money) than one that is way off-center and scores in the low-60's.
First were talking about remarks and comments, who cares if its like 66 or Better, take it from someone that knows, even though i have a couple in my Collection and only because they came along once in a blue moon, i for the Most part ignore them, and they are very hard to resale and you will have To take less usually then you paid so not a real good position to be in. To answer your question the 58 for sure, 35,s would be a little to low as Those have more issues, 45 as long as its PPQ or EPQ as paper quality Is important as you go down the spectrum.
Here,s a 35PPQ note one of the rarer for that series so 35PPQ is not awful By any means, but still has a few issues that are very noticeable.
Here’s a couple examples. 1. This is a rare note with an even rarer RADAR aerial. However, does that special SN really warrant a limp rag with severe damage? I would have rather spend the money on an example without the SN but that was more visually appealing. 2. On the other hand, I have this. This is crisp, in the high XF range. However it does have edge damage and a nasty glob of something on the back. I paid VG or less money for this. I would rather have this damaged XF example than an undamaged but worn one.
Those are very extreme examples, as they are both not that appealing, value Would be greatly affected on each here,s a 15 with comments Which is way better condition then your first note would say it would be a 10 at the very best.
Dont think its realistic to compare nothing more then a filler to even VF 30 as your talking about a not with missing pieces.
Went ahead and did a little splurging this morning on social media. Picked this guy up at a very fair price.
I have a thing for somewhat worn notes. Some people like pristine 67 and 68s in plastic; I like things with more "character" and use. It's really neat to me that a bill that has the 2019 buying power of $9,700 was circulated so heavily. For a nation fresh out of the Great Depression, that's really something.
I admit that I do like looking and purchasing nice/graded notes when possible. However, there’s also a part of me that’s very hands-on and wants to physically handle the actual note which is why I went ahead and purchased this one. Sure, it’s nice to be able to look at my graded $500, but to be able to physically hold and touch a note without worrying/feeling guilty about keeping its pristineness is a very euphoric feeling.
