Here's a better picture; and oh, did I mention it's a ladder serial number? Also, this note is a good example of counterfeit protectors being used. The entire background of the note has "TWENTY" imprinted.
A couple new pickups here: == this $5 star in change from local donut shop ==very nice $20 Narrow variety: == and of course a couple of radar notes:
Well, as I recover from the realization that losing Tony Romo is still better than having Sam Bradford, let me post a new pickup shall I? This is a neat $2 obsolete from the popular Bay State Mining Company. Alot of different overprint colors are a draw on these notes, as well as the pleasant design. This $2 with the yellowed overprint looks downright zazzy...
MEC the yellow is great! Reminds me of all the imprinted revenue stamps on the old bank checks. Found this BLUE one on eBay and thought I'd share it (didn't buy it though). These have always been listed as "overprint" when in reality the Gold and Blue are under the note's major printing. These ornate, colorful 2s were part of the counterfeit prevention scheme.
Today's new pickup is a big money $100 from the popular Canal Bank in Louisiana. The fancy designs and colored reverses make these obsoletes popular, and there are many available making them a neat, affordable note to get in nice grades...
I wonder why so many original banknotes are available? I assumed most were destroyed after FRNs became available. Clearly, I made a false assumption.
MEC2, remember when these remainders were really inexpensive? and now look at the prices! They are very, very beautiful.
Simply a guess but perhaps the thought was: without a date, serial number or signatures; the need to destroy them wasn't very urgent. They were worthless to the public without that information?
Time for a new pickup. A few days ago I posted a $2 from the Egg Harbor Bank, well here is it's little sister. This $1 has the red overprint instead of Green, otherwise it too is a nice design with some interesting engraving, dogs on the hunt here... and you can't go wrong with a big eagle that says Mmmmmerica and a native princess engraving as well... from those skilled chaps at ABNCo...
Today's new pickup is a sharp small size note from Brazil, this orange on orange colored 1000 Cruzeiros note. The reverse depicts the first mass held by Portuguese explorers in the Amazon. This is a later rendition TDLR of an earlier note done by ABNCo which should also be popping up in this thread in the not so distant future...
Today's new pickup is another note from the exquisitely and exhaustively named say-it-with-me Terre Haute Alton & St. Louis Rail Road Company. This $10 is pretty sharp, and it has two trains, which will undoubtedly make Sheldon happy...
Today's new pickup is this vivid reddish-orange obsolete from the Bank of Georgetown from the prolific state of South Carolina. A rare design style with more color than plain paper, the central vignette is big and vivid and is seen on several other obsoletes. Just a nice pop of color for an obsolete...
Today's new pickup is this obsolete from the Plainfield Bank. The bank might be Plainfield, but the design on this note is not plain, it's got stuff going on all over it. Not a very common issue, don't see them every day...
Today in change I actually got 3 bills with 5 of a kind in them. What a day for fool's poker! Nothing earth shattering, but odd sn's I'll hang on to.
Today's new pickup is this colorful obsolete from the Bank of the Commonwealth from the state of Virginia. Alot of red pop on this note, alot of hard wear on this note but it still retains it's attractive appeal. Good quality engraving as you'd expect from this early ABNCo design. Looks like some dudes in a hash deal there...
MEC2: With all the notes you have posted, your collection has grown to be larger than many dealers inventory. Have you ever thought about which are your utmost favorites? You could spend an entire weekend just going through them to remind yourself what you own.
Hey Sam - well I'd hope my collection would be larger than a dealers, I'm a *collector*... I have about 1200 notes of all stripes right now. No need to remind myself what I own, I can look around the room at the frames. I'll try and get some pics and post them soon of my spread. I do go through my currency albums every couple months, front to back, to enjoy those I don't have sitting out. Today's new pickup is another obsolete from the always printing state of South Carolina... this from the State Bank. Busy note with alot going on, I really like the scripted five on the left and the big engraving at center, plus the design is a little different with the slightly off center vignette and counter next to it. Alot of elements and a red overprint enhance the note...
