It Looks like collecting US paper currency is rather high cost? any Comments I have 26TH edition United States Paper Money by Cuhaj & Red Book 4TH edition by Friedberg
Both are decent books, but I wouldn't put much stock in the pricing. As far as collecting US paper money and the costs involved......it's just like collecting coins, it depends on what you collect.
Today's new pickup is this neat $1 design from the South Carolina Rail Road - great engraving from ABNCo and some colorful overprints, including a yellow overprint with Abe Lincoln on it. Not sure if that was a tax overprint from the state or what, but it looks cool on an overall cool design...
When you say do not put too much stock into pricing- many of bills were in $800 + range which is not in my budget for just starting out?
I see a question mark, but I'm not sure I see a question. Collect what you like and what you can afford. As far as the pricing, these books are only general guides to pricing, and your 26th edition has been updated 6 times since to a 32nd edition. I would put more emphasis on SOLD PRICES in auction settings for a compass to pricing.
I'm mostly a coin guy. Never been too into paper. Got this star C-note from the bank today. Would there be any premium to value for this bill?
I wouldn't go more than $20 over face for this, there isn't nothing special about the serial numbers and no errors. You can get regular notes at the bank still in UNC condition for face. The problem with these note is there were a bunch of screw ups early on.
I stopped by the LA today to buy some currency holders and ran across these two crisp in sequence notes. Banco DE Mexico series 1967. By the American Bank Note Company . Very busy and colorful.
Today' new get is a bit of a gear change from the recent obsolete flood, it's a One Mil Reis note from Brazil. This is a later (1917), recolored version of an earlier note released in 1891. I like the engraving on this note, love the back statue and always have loved the gold back notes, like US early cold certs. Although I do think I ever so slightly prefer the original coloring (green and black), this black and gold still looks good to me...
Today's new pickup is another gear shift, now to a small size US red seal single - the very popular FR1500. Great light circulated condition, I think the color is outstanding, really pops and the paper is a great bright white. Also, I like this note because the FR1500's are notoriously poorly centered on the face, and this one has pretty nice centering (not perfect, but a damn sight better than 90% of this issue...)
