The Philippine JIM notes were printed in Japan. The counterfeit notes were not printed with stolen plates. I am not sure what you mean by "monetizing" the occupation currency. MacArthur declared the Philippine JIM notes as invalid (along with all pre-war Commonwealth peso notes) when he returned to the Philippines. The notes themselves were valueless from that point on but other instruments or accounts were not. If you deposited 500 JIM pesos in a bank account the day before the Allied landing you still had 500 pesos in your account after the landing. Similarly, if someone wrote you a check for 100 pesos the day before the landings but it was not cashed until afterwords you would have received 100 pesos in Victory notes.
I would swear I read that a set of plates was stolen (not conflating CSA stories, swear it was a JIM Philippines plate) and used to print fake notes at least of one or more denominations - but that's recollection and subject to just being flat wrong. As to monetization it means just that - giving value to the currency (after it was demonetized). Actually, it could be argued as remonetization - but I'd in fact argue that it can only be remonetized if it was previously monetized by the same authority, and since JIM was not, it would have to be monetized twice - the first time by Imperial Japan, the second time by the US or subsequently the Philippines independent government. I did not realize they declared even US issues as valueless - I imagine that hit some poor folks pretty hard. It should be illegal to post in this thread without a new pickup image, so I am only complying with the law when I post this note...
Great info Lettow - woohoo, mine is the real McCoy! But that might make it just extra common. Oh well, always did prefer the reals to the fakes. Today's new pickup is below. I don't get as many new US large size notes as I'd like (who does?) but occasionally a bargain appears and I can strike. This sucker showed up with a very nice BiN and it therefore had to be acquired. It's a slight upgrade over my old note but an upgrade it is so into the frame it goes!
Interesting JIM discussion.... And I love the Educational Note! I sold/Traded one in Memphis... I finally found an example of this Costa Rica 20 Peso remainder that I was happy enough with to pull the trigger: Beautiful colors and design IMO. The lady on the back is certainly better looking than some of the Greek "Dandy's" MEC has posted... LOL
Like that remainder. So much that I "did not win this auction". Glad to see it found a good home, and that you won't be bidding on the next one... Here is my next one, a 1916 5 Pesos note from the Philippines. This took the slow boat from Manila but I am glad it eventually arrived. I wonder what they call their folders there?
Today's new get is a solid upgrade for me, everyone likes a FRBN Ace don't they? I say yes... and I normally don't post reverses from US Currency since they are so familiar, but everyone like the spread eagle on the reverse don't they? I say yes...
That is funny, but good luck to you because I have seen lesser examples go for more than this one did. When I looked at the auction I was happy to see it was so nicely centered so I put in my best price and it held out...by a tiny margin... PS: Beautiful Victory Note and very nice FRBN! Here is a lovely example from Lyn's recent auction: Top Pop 7/0 Oh and I cant forget this great pickup from Memphis. A Scarce Walters OK note that is likely the best one available... I almost lost out on this note as I had reached a deal for it but then the seller had a dealer buy out his inventory and the note was included. Luckily I was able to secure the note from the new owner with the same deal and I am very happy with it!!!
Love that Egypt note, glad to see someone else post an Egypt note! And you know I am going to like that Dallas $10 star Bonni... Today's new get is... well lets post Egypt shall we? Always like blue on a note, and they don't get much bluer. This 1963 25 Piastres note is a nice design, and caps a quest to find a nice price on one - this note is harder to get a deal on than one might think...
I'm curious what you would deem to be a bargain on this note. I hadn't seen anyone under-price an educational with BIN. All I've seen have been dramatically overpriced.
New addition. Fourth Issue 10 cent in choice uncirculated condition. Unfortunately the margins aren't even enough to call it a gem. One of my favorite fractional designs.
On that Educational, just a bit over the century mark Funkee... yes, people tend to overprice their BiN, which is why you have to be ever alert for the 1 in 100 that underprice their BiN... Sure like your new gets Midas, especially those Costa Rica remainders you posted elsewhere... Today's new pickup is a great one for me, my first 1882 $5 Brownback note, happy to now have the 5 and 10 and looking for a 20 to really step it up a notch. The red seal is vivd on this and the signatures are real standouts to me. Real pleased with this, and thanks to a man named Jim for a solid deal on it.
Thanks MEC2 it didn't occur to me to post them in the new acquisitions thread until I had already posted them in a new thread. That's a sweet $5 brownback. Mike
