Haha. A nice $5 educational? I don't have all that much money. Most of my disposable income went to that AU Chief and Woodchopper. I did pick up a new and rare error on eBay. I really lucked out on this one. Only one other is known so far. I'm now joining ANA to get this new acquistion and one other error sent out to PMG. I don't have a need for either - I'm not really into errors. If I have estimated its value correctly, I'll probably sell it for a high grade $1 educational and a high grade $500. My hopes are high for this one. I'll post it as soon as it arrives.
It has been quiet around here lately... I am looking forward to seeing this error, Funkee! Here are some new ones: Pop 15/3 Pop 3/0
A few more acquisitions. These were part of a larger lot, which I'll have to list in parts. The Legal Tender and Silver Cert are already back on the market, on eBay. The offset error will be listed tomorrow. 1928-E $5 Legal Tender - Gem Unc with a few minor blemishes 1934-A $5 Silver Certificate XF+ to AU 1977A $5 Federal Reserve Note VF - Minor Offset Error
Funkee: I like the 1928E from the pic! Dictator: Nice Notes! does the T&T have some inscription or writing at the top? A very scarce Tulsa National Banknote: This went for pretty cheap and I couldn't pass on it....
Lovin the national, tiger. The '28-E is on eBay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/121110309275 and bids are still low. Having seen some PPQ Superb Gems with smudges, spots and stains, I'm quite confident it won't affect the grade in the condition it's in. An easy 66PPQ, maybe 67. The bottom margin on the rear is just very slightly smaller than the top. An mm or two more to the bottom would get us to 68, I think.
Hi Tiger-The note has some handwritten reference numbers on the top, this is often the case with specimens by TDLR, the bottom has "Specimen note" printed. I think this one would rate a 66, except they do count the writing as a defect. I like your fancy serial number star.
Presumably that's all writing relating to approval of colors etc on the note. At least that's what I'd hope for, and it would be interesting if you could confirm it. It certainly makes the specimen more "real" if so, and much more collectable IMO. Dave
I would not agree with whoever "they" are, in this case. If the writing is TDLR notations as part of the approvals and what-not for this note, then it adds value. I doubt it's graffiti added later. Dave
Hi Dave-You are right...I found one other image of a Specimen of this note and it had all the same notations across the top, and an additional one on the bottom...even looked like it was written by the same hand. "They" are mixed in their opinions....some consider it a "defect" others consider it an integral part of the note....I am of the latter belief as you point out it adds to the authentication of the note... Cheers!
Hi Dave...I contacted DeLaRue and they replied the writing means the following HH 256 is the factory batch reference number, 11 50/1 Reference number for TDLR records, 18.7.42 is order date, 91A/1 is the local reference number for accounting purposes. They verified all real specimens will have these annotations.
That is awesome that they responded with this great info! It makes it that much "cooler" IMO. Today I picked up this $5 Value Back locally. Value Backs are tough in Oklahoma and I am happy to add it to the collection:
MEC: When are you coming back to help us keep this thread at the top? I have shown these on a couple different forums but they are new and highlight that I collect Oklahoma Nationals. If you have any or know of any for sale, feel free to let me know...
