Don't know how or why but I keep marginally upgrading my 1934 $10 New York lime note, though I think I might stop trying now, this note is a great example, love the lime, dark color against the white paper, just a nice example. Got it for $3 over face. SHAPOW!!!
My latest addition to my serial #12 collection, courtesy of Dave Undis (CoolSerialNumbers). It's my first serial #12 Silver Certificate.
Postman comes thru...proudly displayed on my 1940's steamer trunk which incidentally was purchased at a garage sale for $5.
Picked up this 5th issue, 10 cent note in XF+ / AU. Got these in a bank withdrawal in the south bay. 1953A $2 LT (Fine) 1976 $2 FRN (AU) 1995 $10 FRN (VF) The teller didn't even realize she had a 1953A LT in her stack of 2s. It's a shame I haven't been visiting this particular branch. They told me they recently sent some FRBNs to the Fed, thinking no one wanted them. Plus they get lots of 1928 notes as well. It's not as crazy as the woman who turned in an AU 1928 $500 gold cert in the Lafayette branch, but this one seems to be promising.
Bonni - best thing about that frame is now that you've made the investment, you can add the $5 CSA "assassination" note above it, and then when you get the $20, turn the frame sideways and stack them 1 2 3... Funkee - that's a quality Meredith, do you have many other fractionals or just getting started? Went downtown and picked up this new star from Heritage, it actually upgrades a F12 note I had to this VF25 so a nice little jump in quality, note is stiff as a board in hand...
Thanks funkee, I have always called them United States Notes. I found it interesting though that the Standard Catalog of United States Paper Money refers to them as US Notes but the Red Book refers to them as Legal Tender Notes. I always thought that the legal tenders were the large size notes only. Learned something.
I've had this 1969C San Francisco Star for a while now, and in the Schwartz/Lindquist guide they show one run of 2,400,000.... ....then one day I was going over Azpiazu's guide and Robert shows 2 runs. Run #1 with 1,280,000 and run #2 with 1,120,000. So I just had to pick up this one. These are harder to find than one might think.
websiteswebsites Did you but that one from Roberts website? I've only seen those listed on 2 or 3 dealers websites
Just getting started. My only other is a 5th issue 50 cent Bob Hope note, uncirculated. I think I'll complete my 5th issue set first and then work backwards. I found this beauty recently. Never seen it before. Experimental 2nd issue.
Funkee - I enjoyed collecting my fractional set, the 3rd and 4th series are where the real action is, the 1st and 2nd are so limited in design that they are just sort of meh, the 5th is so common, the 3rd and 4th are real teethbusters, especially Lincoln. I got lucky on my Lincoln. Well, I just lost another auction. BY TWO CENTS. TWO CENTS. God Almighty... that's okay, I have good auction karma coming since I got a second chance offer on a note that finished under reserve, it's a rare one and I can't wait to post it. COME ON MAILMAN! Here's another small star from 1934, this time 1934-C, starting to get a few of these C series in. This one is a nice VF. I think tomorrow I might post a Costa Rica remainder note I got, time to add some color to this thread.
Have to agree with MEC here, the third and fourth issues of the fractional series are where the great designs are found, but you will pay for nice examples. I haven't seen a Lincoln below $80 in almost any condition in this area. Have to say in my opinion though that fractional issues are severely undervalued right now, so you're in a good investment area to purchase them now at the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.
What are the most popular/colorful designs for the mpc's? In addition to the most scarce and bring the most premiums?
Here's the first of three new pickups from Costa Rica - this one from ABNCo, so you know it is going to have dynamite engraving. These were all remainders I believe the bank released on it's anniversary in the mid 20th century. I just loved the color and supremely dark pop of the engraving on this note. Not expensive or particularly rare, just good looking and gives a nice pop of color to my collection...
MEC, wow that Costa Rica note is striking! I thought I would go ahead and put up a fractional I hadnt posted... I think it is graded right. Perfect note with sloppy centering!
Always on the lookout for some cheap fancy serials and oddities that I can cherrypick. Here's a few I've picked up from several dealers and antique shops. Semi-low serial, but the last four make up an interesting step up ladder. And here's a nice birthday star, anyone with a Sept. 2, 1958 birthday? And here's a note with several errors, gutter fold and misaligned 3rd print. And here's a mighty fine pair of 34's, the top 34A has nice & rich black vignettes and very few problems. And here's a common Speelman/White 1923 Horsey that will compliment the other 2 tougher sig combos I already have. Usually I buy the cheapest first, but not in this case.
And finally got my first Black Eagle. The only issue it has is the center fold, but a beautiful Parker/Burke nonetheless.
