Looking for paper money dealers of any type, that are interested in receiving information from me when I am disposing of bills, Ive reached out to about 10 paper money dealers at this point, all found to be complete scumbags except for 1 so far, so I would like to add 1 or 2 more non scumbags, If you think this might be you, please send me a message or reply. Thanks
The Paper currency market is very very soft and has been for quite sometime and Dealers are hesitant to add new inventory.
In terms of which I am disposing of, I have been approaching it on a basis of which bills are currently selling closest to values I find for comparable bill sales on the internet/ha.com etc., Large Size
Sticker # Friedberg # Series Denomination/Descrip Serial # Plate Position Charter # PMG Pop PMG Grade Received 1 FR224 1896 $1 Silver Cert. I can tell you have made an effort to put together a nice collection. The main problem I see with your collection is that most have not been graded. That said, I think you have a collection which would meet the minimum for consignment through one of the major auction companies. Stacks, Heritage....Lynn Knight. What do you appraise your collection to be valued ?
Heritage currency director estimated proceeds of 50,000-70,000 but I believe 100,000-120,000 is possible if I sell it piece mail and find the right buyers as opposed to dumping the whole collection at the next platinum signature series night in September which they wanted me to consign for. And thank you coinman for the complement. I am also in the process of getting everything graded at the moment.
i think the heritage director is closer then your estimate. we always think our collections are worth way more than they actually are. my collection use to consist of thousands of notes. a majority are them were higher grades AU or better. by your calculations my collection would have been worth $600,000-$800,000. i can tell you i got no where near that in return. just sayin
No dealer or auction house is going to promise you retail prices. They too have to make their money. If a collector is willing to pay $1,000 for a note, the auction house or the dealer may recover $800-$900 for you. They are in the business to make money and are going to make a cut. What you can do is sell these out one at a time on eBay to collectors directly. You'll eat some fees, but you'll recover more than you would from HA, Stacks or Lyn Knight. If you open an eBay store (with a monthly fee), you might be able to get the fees down some more.
yes but 20% margin is fair, ive received offers from dealers expecting to double their money compared with retail prices
I hope you find a representative that will give you 100% of their experience and knowledge in maximizing the collection's value.
If you are going to dump it to a dealer, considering posting scans of them here in the BST, a collector would love to get them under retail as well as the dealer... pick a fair price to you and ask. Worst thing that happens is you are out a couple minutes of your time... I'd do that before eBay.
problem im facing is i dont have the money to get them all graded at once, tough matching demand and supply that I have, considering im also relatively new to this, other then when i was very young I never did much research on this.
Overall given the dynamics of this particular collection I do NOT believe eBay is the best option. HA may well be pricey, but factor in eBay's fees, payPoo fees and well, lousy search parameters and you could well just be taking a cold shower with eBay. I don't see much that sticks out to form a particular collecting theme that would attract buyers to LK - but a lot of these could end up in weekly HA auctions and a few of them could make some signature auctions. As for my collection, I would send the foreign and Nationals to LK, the large denomination and LT stuff to HA and doff off eBay entirely. I haven't sold on eBay since 2008. And lately I find that searches without wildcards etc are just too much of a pain.
HA has a 17.5% buyer's premium. So any bidder will factor that it in to the price they are willing to pay. If the buyer is willing to pay $1,000 for an item, they'll bid up to $851. Because after the buyer's premium, the buyer is going to pay $1,000 on a bid of $851. A seller can capture up to a maximum of $851 from HA, but even then, they may not get the full hammer price unless they have an extremely rare item. The seller might get 90% of the hammer price (if they're lucky), so that leaves them with $765.90. On eBay on the other hand, there's no buyer's premium. The seller pays the fees. The maximum fees are 10% for eBay and about 2.9% for PayPal. Final value fees can be less than 10% depending on the listing and if the seller has a store. With no fees on the buyer, the person from my last example, would bid up to $1,000. That leaves the seller with $871. That's substantially more than what you would have received from Heritage. I won an HA auction recently, for a 1928G $2 Legal Tender Star Note. I won with a bid of $1! That's because after the buyer's premium, processing fees, and shipping, I paid about $23.00. But the seller only got $1.00 for a $2 dollar bill. I think that's pretty sh¡tty. The advantage of the signature auctions at the big auction houses, is that they attract serious bidders looking for very high end stuff. Gathering them in one area ensures that prices are driven up to fair market value. Buyers willing to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars prefer live auctions, because they can examine the items first-hand (sometimes through an agent). For the rarest notes that fetch 5-figures or more, these auction houses make sense. Even though there are serious buyers and dealers spending big money on eBay, it's possible not get two or more on the auction at the same time, to drive the closing price up to where it needs to be. It can close too low if there is no reserve. But for items that are $10,000 and less, eBay is going to be your friend because you will get far more exposure among mid-range collectors and dealers.
funkee, that 1 dollar for $2 dollar legal tender is a fantastic example, and likely happens to any piece that does not at that current moment have a deep market of interested buyers, and from the looks of current market, that might of happend to almost all of my small size bills, also about the willingness to pay a certain price, that is also true, I think what is really needed is a way to bridge the gap between collectors wishing to buy and sell. I was envisioning some sort or newsletter a month or two back, where collectors could post what they want to buy and sell on a weekly or monthly basis, cut out the middlemen as it were, seems they are taking a lot of money and not providing much value.......
There are places you can do that now -- they are called BST boards. This site has one. So does the PCGS paper money board, the PMG paper money board, the CCF board, etc.
