This is the Polio Innovation Dollar Coin dated 2019-P. PAN is the Pennsylvania Association of Numismatics. It’s from the 2020 ANA of World’s Fair of Money as indicated on the slab label. No grade is given till just say it’s in MS condition. It’s really clean but there is 1 nasty cut near the Statue of Liberty. If I remember correctly, @paddyman98 posted one years ago.
Since this is about the Polio Vaccine I want to give a little history about it. The University of Pittsburgh hired Dr. Jonas Salk in 1947 for the purpose of developing a polio vaccine. In the late 40s and early 50s polio was a devastating disease mainly affecting children and young adult adults many were left paralyzed or with disabilities. In 1953 the University announced that his team had discovered a vaccine that they believe could prevent the disease. After two years of clinical trials, which were first conducted in southwestern Pennsylvania, the vaccine was determined to be effective and safe. Its administration to millions of Americans was effectively used to eliminate polio and helped us in a new area of virology. Before the vaccine, the nation was ravaged by polio. The discovery of the vaccine lifted people spirits and helped return a sense of community and leisure to American families. The American medical Association said it was one of the greatest events in the history of medicine. That’s a young child I remember going to elementary school and in the second grade the vaccine was issued to all students. The vaccine was just a sugar cube coated in pink. It worked as polio was greatly reduced in my early years. My uncle, the man that married my mother’s sister, had to walk with a brace on his leg his entire life as he developed polio as a young boy. It was a very debilitating and deadly disease that affected millions.
