Ok, coin detectives, here’s a riddle for you: two boxes of halves, including twenty or so of various date, with this flat finish on both sides. They almost look painted. The finish almost obscures the details of the coins. Seen this before? I haven’t.
I find taking pictures of coins on a white paper background shows better. (With my crappy camera.) These look like they were ground, or harshly cleaned, or tumbled.
I bet these were covered in an epoxy finish on somebody’s bar top or coffee table..... My daughter gave me a paperweight that has several BU Franklins and such encased in a block of epoxy or lucite. I often wonder what collectors a hundred years from now will think happened to those pieces.
This is a good tip; I think the White paper reflects enough ambient light, that the flash defaults 'off'. Cam flash reflecting off a coin makes for wasted shots... Maybe take the pics again on White paper. How's the reeding look? Cleaned? Or full of dirt / jam?
