I have finally been able to get some Roman Republics in my price range and the first one I am sharing is a denarius from P Laeca. P Laeca (110 - 9 B.C.) AR Denarius O: Helmeted head of Roma right "P LAECA" behind, "X" below chin. R: Roman soldier standing left, placing his hand on the head of a citizen, lictor behind "PROVOCO" in exergue. 3.82g 19mm Porcia 4
Nice. I'm strictly an imperial guy, starting with Antony (though I suppose it technically is a Republican coin, or at least from the era of the triumvirs).
Very cool image of Roma! Here’s one from the same years from everybody’s fav CT pal, @Bing! C.Claudius Pulcher AR Denarius Cr300/1, Biga OBV: Head of Roma r., wearing helmet decorated with circular device REV: Victory in biga r., holding reins in both hands; in exergue, C. PVLCHER 3.5g, 18mm Struck at Rome, 110-109 BC AD ex Bing coin talk
Nice provoco coin! I love this type It’s a very interesting type illustrating the principle of provocatio, a procedure by which a citizen had the right to appeal to the people against the decision of a magistrate which he considered to represent an abuse of official power. Unfortunately my PROVOCO is barely readable.... P. Porcius Laeca, denarius 3,70 g. 18 mm. Obv. Helmeted head of Roma right. X below chin, ROMA above, P LAECA behind. Rev. Military figure standing left, his right hand raised, facing togate citizen standing right, gesturing with right hand, attendant standing left behind military figure holding three rods, PROVOCO in exergue.
