The most overrated is definitely the state quarters program. While I liked the idea at first (I like Prexibux at the moment too), it has gotten old. People who collect them seem to think they're going to be valuable one day. I have a friend who insists that his so far complete 50 quarters collection's going to be worth hundreds of dollars in about twenty years since he gets them as soon as they come out. He doesn't even both mintmarks. Then again, maybe inflation will make his dream come true. :goofer: The most underrated? Probably Roosevelt dimes out of circulating coins. I believe that they have gone the longest without a change, and they're generally ignored.
I think the most underrated set would be the ASEs. When the mint discontinues it someday, the set will probably immediately double in price and might no longer be viewed as a simple bullion coin. It also has the increasing price of silver going for it. I agree with others that state quarters are the most overrated.
I've told this story before. Back in the 70's myself and a freind were going to make a big killing on those Bicentennial Quarters. We both socked away as many as we could afford. He had thousands of dollars worth and I had several hundred dollars worth and mostly in MS grades. Not long ago we both tried to sell some at coin stores or coins shows. One dealer said $0.24 each as an expression of just how much he didn't want them. No one did except for a quarter each so we both dumped them all in the bank. Hope you have better luck than we did.
Over-rated: ASE's Under-rated: Canadian coinage Bias aside, have you ever seen the difference between a Canadian and a US Mint set? I've bought plenty of both and maybe I'm getting a bad run on the US sets, but the Canadian sets look like a Mint set SHOULD look... no dings or scratches!
Overrated--State quarters, pres dollars & Kennedy halves. Underrated-- Peace $s, Indian Head cents. Bruce
