Man, I love the Kushans!! (yah, mainly because of this sweet statue, which I occasionally use as my avatar) ... pretty cool ... anyway ... Ummm, here is my only Kushan ... India, Kushan, AE TET ... sure, perhaps I'm a bit coin-shallow? *whatev* => I love awesome lookin' coins!! (end o' story)
This might classify as “other” and it looks old but is not really so ancient. This Persian coin is called a “Larin” and it circulated in the 1600’s around the Arabian Sea. Seafaring merchants used these Larin. 5.5 of these things equaled a Spanish colonial piece of eight. The name Larin is derived from the Persian town of Lar Iran which may have been the first to produce the coin. Here is a new thread with many photos to introduce this newp. The new thread is in our ancients section even though it is not so ancient. I hope this is OK with you all. Sometimes it is easier to get forgiveness than it is to get permission.
here are a couple of "other" recent pick ups. Sunga Kingdom, cast AE unit, 175-75 BC O: elephant, R: Three arched hills, crescent above. 16 mm, 2.3 g. this coin is really not in bad shape for the type, most are a bit rough. there are different denominations of this coin, I'm not sure what mine is (1/4 karshapana?). the Sunga kings ruled northeastern india after the fall of these guys... Mauryan, AR karshapana, 270-175 BC 5 punch marks obverse, 1 reverse, 15x11 mm, 3.4 g, GH 570 here are the punches... i've been wanting one of these with "hill chickens" for quite some time. i guess they are hill peacocks...but they'll always be hill chickens in my book.
That's so cool.. never seen those marks before.. and in excellent condition with sharp clarity to boot..
I wished so much there were Ancient Egyptian or Meroitic coins...but their currency has none. As my username states (Napata of Kush), I wished so much they were some. The only Ancient Egyptian one I've heard (and many scholars think it was only minted in the Levant) is the coin of Nectanebo II.
