I have no idea what CAC's stance is on chop marks. Other than that, it looks like a pretty solid EF-40. But there is just something that is bothering me about the surfaces, I think it's the haloing around the devices. My gut say's they would not pass it. However, having said that, Trade Dollar's are not in my wheelhouse.
I don't either and would actually like to know more about how they feel about them. I don't have the slightest clue and would love to learn more about that if someone can get information on it
Interesting. It is a clean grade xf40 with chop mark designation (PCGS). It’s a recognized variety nowadays. Can error coins get clean grades too? This particular coin is an esoteric rarity (I like those sorts of things). It has a type 2 reverse which is extremely rare with chop marks for this issue. Has something to do with the order of the Carson city mintage in 1875. The type 2 reverse was used sparingly late in the year so I guess it must not have been used so much in international commerce. PCGS estimates a total of 60 such pieces in existence.
So I spoke to CAC, and they recognize chop marks, they will not preclude a coin from passing CAC due to chop marks. So I don't think this one will be held back because of the chop marks on the obverse and reverse.
