First, are two copies of a title which is in high demand and exceedingly difficult to find, The Comprehensive Encyclopedia of United States Liberty Seated Quarters by Larry Briggs, well known as the best available reference on Seated Quarters. The first copy shows signs of light to moderate use (shelfwear and scuffing) but not much else. The interior is clean and unmarred. The second likewise has a clean interior but has some wrinkling on the reverse cover near the spine and a heavy crease on the front cover at the top right, extending about half way down the cover. Asking $109 and $95, respectively. Next, The Obsolete Paper Money of Virgina by Charles J. Affleck. Two Volume Set. The first is "concerning Virginia Obsolete Paper Money from the early nineteenth century through the Civil War; included are Virginia Treasury Notes, County, City and Town emissions, and Private and Business scrip." The second printing of the limited edition, the print run was constrained to 300 copies, starting at 501; this copy is #745. It is inscribed on the front endpaper: "To my friend Alvin G. Macomber with best wishes - Charles J. Affleck. May 30, 1970" Some moderate foxing at the edges and inside flaps of the dust jacket and first few pages, with bumped corners. 237 pages, all clean and unmarked with excellent illustrations. The second volume covers private banks of the same period, with 20 beautiful full color plates and plenty of B&W illustrations on the 265 pages. Limited edition of 1000 copies, this one being #973. Inscribed "To my friend Alvin G. Macomber with cordial regards - Charles J. Affleck." On the full color portrait page, signed "Best wishes, Charles J. Affleck". From the Katen Numismatic Library, as indicated by a small bookplate in the lower right corner of the inside front cover. Quite a rare set on a fascinating subject, for $89. Of the three books (or sets of books), the below is by far the rarest and should be a very exciting opportunity for the collector of numismatic literature. An original set of Colonial Currency Reprints 1682-1751. The set is a massive compilation of original source documents gathered by the esteemed economic historian, Andrew McFarland Davis. Published in 1910 and 1911 for the Prince Society, who's purpose was to publish “rare works, in print or manuscript, relating to America.” The print run was limited to 250 sets, thus making the originals quite difficult to find. Originally issued in tan paper covers, this set has been bound in lovely hard green cloth covers, with gold gilt lettering. It seems that of the small print run, most of those that weren't lost or destroyed went to university libraries and historical societies, and have the many stamps, writings, and misuses associated. This set is not without minor issues, listed below, but taken in context, the condition of the set is superb. One of the few examples of past sales I have found is in a David Sklow Auction, October 11th, 2014, lot 276, where the set was described as follows: "Davis, Andrew McFarland. COLONIAL CURRENCY REPRINTS 1682-1751. FOUR VOLUMES. Boston. 1910-1911. xx, 471pp. 470pp. 18pls. xix, 496pp. 8pls. xvi, 503pp. 15pls. 8vo. Original tan paper covers. Publication of the Prince Society; being some 58 tracts concerning coinage, currency and banking; 41 plates with tissue guards; a limited edition of 250 sets were produced; this set was purchased originally by William Keeney Bixby of St. Louis, MO. Two announcements concerning the publication of the volumes are tipped in; also a receipt from the treasurer of the Prince Society dated Dec. 30, 1911 stating payment was received; the set was presented to the Missouri Historical Society by W.K. Bixby and is so stamped on covers and title pages; Ex: Missouri Historical Society with their stamps and markings; covers loose, some detached, but present; chipping; uncut pages throughout; a most interesting set, especially with the accompanying tipped in items; usually seen rebound, seldom in covers of issue." Even in the less than perfect described condition, the set sold for sold for $375 (w/o BP or shipping), on an estimate of the same number. I've included a detailed list of the issues, as books as scarce as these deserve the attention, and so that the fastidious numismatic bibliophile may know all of the facts. Volume 1: small unobtrusive needle piercing through the upper right corner of pages 200-471 (end). A couple of stray markings and a few ruffled pages. Volume 2: Small water mark a lower left corner of pages from the beginning of the book, through intro page XII and the first plate. The pages also have a small tear (less than an inch) in the same spot. Volume 3: Pages 125-135 lightly damaged at lower right quadrant (small tears/holes/bends). Volume 4: Bottom right corner of pages 98-114 crunched. Small oval hole through front fly leaf. All of the covers show light scuffing and shelf wear. This is quite the small list of issues for a set totaling nearly 2000 pages with more than 100 years under its belt. Beyond the above listed auction, I can't find any other sales of an original set. Given its rarity and excellent condition, I am asking $399 delivered and insured. More detailed photographs can be taken for any interested party.
