Without getting political, can you all give me your thoughts on this coin? I can separate my political views from my views as a coin collector in that I've always been a proponent for more coinage designs. Never authorized by legislation, but made at the direction of the Secretary of the Treasury, these coins were made, like it or not. They now exist, so it's water under the bridge, IMHO. Me, personally, I don't think that we needed the coin. It's truly a vanity project for our sitting president, but it is not without precedent, as the Sesquicentennial Half Dollar in 1926 featured the portrait of the sitting president, Calvin Coolidge. There is also a July 4th privy mark version that was discovered at the coin's launch at the World's Fair of Money in Pittsburgh. The July 4th privy marks should bring more people on board with this coin, because as a collectible, it's interesting and having the privy mark version seems like something worth owning.
It's going to be hard to keep this non-political, but fair warning, everyone please remain on topic, without any unnecessarily political comments, and keep in mind CoinTalk's rules, so I don't have to send this thread to never-never-land. Beyond that, I like the overall coin design. When I saw the full photo many months ago with the fists on the table, I couldn't understand how they could take that portrait and fit it onto any coin, nor did I like the "angry" look the fists suggested. Now that I see the coin was cropped in tight, it looks much nicer to me. I also like the heraldic eagle reverse, as its reminds me of the Kennedy series reverse, which is a design I love and collect. My non-political thought. If you like Donald Trump's official portrait for this term (the angry one) you will like this coin, as I think it captured an angry look from him. Maybe in a hundred years if history reframes this for people not currently living, it will be ok for a bigger portion of people, as psychologically (not necessarily politically) there are issues with memorializing him. The overall design is clean and actually nice, with the way they framed Liberty and the years. Kinda reminds me of a number of Euro coins, just not done with two metals. Hopefully this met the non-political guidelines.
It won’t be too long and this coin will be a part of our nations history, like so much of the coinage before it. I expect I’ll get one at some point, as I’m sure it will be needed for a full type set.
Looks like he is scowling....should be a side-profile or needs to have a smile. Is that the proposed coin ? Is it final ? When is it coming out ?
They were released at the World's Fair of Money in Pittsburgh a few days ago. Yes, the actual coins are out.
Well.... We suspended the cent because it cost us money. So that was reasonable. We have been minting small dollars this entire century and seldom if ever do we find one in circulation. I think it is a boondoggle and yes, I too want one.
Yeah, that was my thought as well. Like the Sacagawea coins, and other modern dollar coins, I NEVER see them in change unless I personally go to the bank, ask for them, and then intentionally spend them. I have done that a few times in past 20 years, but probably not for the last decade. The ultimate fate of this coin is likely to disappear from everyday commerce, not for political reasons, but because the culture hasn't used coin purses wildly since the early 1980's, and that was only old school grandmothers in their 70's at the time. Meaning, even younger generations like Millennials, that often prefer paying "cash" for certain items (bars / food trucks / pizza places, etc), DONT carry around pocket change coins for spending. $50 bills is the new $20 bill, and $1 coins just don't buy enough to justify the weight and space in a pocket.
