Thanks! All you really have to know about these is that they made them to be nice, but Cameo is not something that they intended
For all practical purposes some of the dies were proofs. They used different processes for the dies, striking, and handlings and there's a lot of mixing and matching. But almost every single coin was struck only a single time so they aren't proofs. Very few planchets had any polish. Strike pressure was set higher than on proofs and old proof presses were used to strike them. They have to be almost complete cameo on both sides to get the designation.
Between the two obverse photos. I am unsure that it would go DCAM. I think there should be more frost on the devices. (obv.)
Thanks pickin’. I am relatively sure that the depth of the frost is the only thing that would hold this back. It is complete as best I can tell. With the number of DCAMs total extant in the low double digits, I thought it would be worth the fee to grade it and see.
Thanks I can clearly see that there is contrast. I can clearly see that this is well above the average for the date. I'd say that there is at least CAM contrast. But, as Pickin' says..... its nearly impossible to tell DCAM vs. CAM from pictures. Even if a really good photographer shot this coin, it would be difficult to accurately determine.
That is a really nice looking Quarter. It certainly makes CAM in my opinion. The way I am reading the images, I would think it has a shot at DCAM. @mikenoodle with this kind of coin, I would use 2 lights at around 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock with them at low angles to the surface of the coin. The lower the lights the better as the fields will reflect the light away from the lens and the frost of the devices will show much better. Also, if your having focusing issues, it could be the distance from the coin. Try raising your phone a bit higher with a smaller book and use the zoom function in the camera to fill the frame, rather than lowering the phone closer. What can happen is the phone can't focus close enough and it starts to go blurry.
Absolutely the best 1967 I have ever seen. But what can it grade? MS-67 Cam? There are small patches where there is no cam. Does that disqualify it?
Be careful, once you start getting hooked on finding those CAM/DCAM's they become addicting. I am always on the look out for them. Those and PL/DMPL Morgans as well as any PL type coin.
Update: I sent both the Quarter and the Franklin Half off for grading. They are currently in grading/QC and I will do a Guess The Grade thread when I get the results. I think that the array of answers will be educational and entertaining.
