Hello everyone. I just took some decent pictures of a pair of Ptolemy II coins and was wondering if they should be further cleaned?
I wouldn't clean them because you will lose the nice contrast provided by the patina which is present in the recesses. It is possible that the "sandy" patina on your coin is some applied substance-- colored wax or makeup which might damage the coin-- so an argument can be made for routinely soaking all such coins in alcohol or mineral spirits. I'd leave these alone though.
Oh, if anyone has any suggestions or critiques on the photos, I would love to hear them! I took a punch of pictures tonight. Many I had images of already but I want to expand this hobby into numismatic photography. Think I need a book.
I absolutely agree with everyone about leaving them as they are... However, photo tips are best left to anyone else in our group BUT me! LOL
