Mike, I could maybe see 65, but still think it is a 64 until I see it in hand. I would agree with net grading on a coin with a carbon spot. I had a 1972 dbl that was in an MS65 rd holder that in no way would have re graded that way after it developed an ugly little carbon spot right on the obverse. I could see some wood grain toning getting a net grade, because I think some of it is rather ugly. I just happen to like this one. No doubt I would be a little happier with some of the dark toning on the bottom of the reverse to be lighter but it was not bad enough for me not to get this coin. Is it the entire coin you do not like or a particular side? I will be watching the thread on CU though.
Congrats on the auction win. The 1871 in proof is the second highest proof mintage for the two cent series, and your win price is in line with numismedia estimated values and what I have been seeing. My problem was I couldn't stop with just one two cent proof. LOL
Congrats on the win. I like some woodgrains in copper, but not all. This looks nice in the photo and I hope just as nice in person.
